That's it. Someone get a rope. here is a guy who is gonna play 140some games and have 600+ ABs and I just cant believe he made a bad decision. Unthinkable. He has been in the league only what, 5-6 years and already he makes a bad decision. I would think we should get at least 10 years out of him before the first mistake. Forget trading him, as no one would likely want him. Just release his sorry butt.

I totally agree. For all you guys that like to do the Bit***** and whinning I got one thought for ya, become a NY fan the do it all the time you should fit right in nothing ever is good enough.

Wow the man made a mistake look at Young in the out field. He would not even have a job. Ya he can hit the ball but look at him in the field scares the hell out of me every time a ball is hit his way.

I don't think anyone is calling for his head some of us along with Gardenhire are just frustrated by one of the best hitters in the game bunting in that situation. I don't really blame him because he thought it was the best way for him to get on base.....but it wasn't a bunting situation in some of our constitutionally protected opinions is all.....He's Joe Mauer not Nick Punto.

We still all love Joe if that makes you guys feel better... grin

The bottom line... it was a poor decision. It looked a lot like a guy with zero confidence trying to pass the buck onto someone else. If Morneau is up next, I still think it is a poor choice, but I wouldn't have as much issue with it.

If he isn't confident enough to swing the bat in a big spot, maybe we should move him down.

Wow are we REALLY still talking about ONE bunt by Joe Mauer? Game is over, can't get that one back, time to move on. Joe bunted, yipee! 4 pages of discussion about a bunt...Who would of thought?!

Kind of my thought to Born, but it takes the pressure off of my Pale Hose so let the debate continue until Oct. 1st! LOL

The problem with Mauer bunting in that situation is it does no good for anyone. The tieing run is already in scoring position with 1 out. That gives your #3 and #4 batters each a chance to hit him in. If its Punto at the plate hitting #9 then I say go for it. He has a much better chance of bunting for a hit and at the worse he moves the runners over for the lead off hitter. If Mauer was fast enough to have a good chance to bunt his way on, I would hope that he would have more than only one stolen base on the year. With as often as he has been on base he would certainly get plenty of chances to steel a few more bases if he were that speedy.

If he would have been safe would this armchair conversation be taking place? Probably not,Everyone would be saying good bunt!No one ever expected it! Way to go Joe.

Finally found it, I knew some baseball dweeb would have this stat. Joe Mauers career batting average when bunting for a hit;

.750 (Thru 2009)

This is the 2nd time he's tried to bunt for a base hit when he should have been trying to drive in a crucial tying or go ahead run.

There are times to bunt and times not to bunt Joe messed up and that's OK he still deserves his 184 MILLION as far as I'm concerned.

I am not posting about the actual bunt itself, but the people that keep bringing up reasons why the bunt was such a horrible idea......

Just a hunch but I'm willing to bet we won't see him bunting in that situation again.

Like stated above I wouldn't mind seeing him drop a few down in other non game on the line RBI scenario's though.

Hey, I tried to end this thing with a fake made up bunting statistic. And no one even called me on it. wink

As I posted the real bunting statistic, anybody ever bunt a homerun, and none of you acknowledged, I end my participation in this thread.

I would move Young into the 3 spot. Mauer just does not seem to get the clutch hits like Young.

actually -- Christian Guzman bunted for a HR (with an ER) for the Twins in 04 or 05.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
