I was out The 11th and there were around 4" of ice. I drove back out earlier this week (maybe Sunday/Monday) at night without an auger but it looked like others had been out.

I'm hoping to hit some of the local lakes down here this weekend over the Christmas break, Hanska included.

Well, Hanska is now broke open at Geiger's point. Went out yesterday hoping to anchor in and catch some fishes and right off the first landing at Geigers there's a river cut through the ice.

Looks like one guy couldn't get his wheel house off as Its pushed way up against the bank opposite gieger's landing - in between the point and godahl landing.

Stupid wind, warmth, rain, what a mess.

I did but the map was not as in depth as I was hoping. It shows the general depths where the dredger went through but nothing too detailed.

My buddy found a map with 2 maps of Hanska and Clear Lake Brown County on it at Scheels in Mankato, that map has much more detail and would be worth checking out. I believe they also sell the book with all southern MN in it as well.

Not looking too good on Hanska today.

There were many spots near Godahl point that had been open and skimmed over. The main landing "looked" OK.

Looks worse than what I saw on Monday.

The main landing on the south end of the lake was fine. If you go off toward the dam area it seemed there was more ice. As I started along to the right off the main landing the ice was significantly thinner (around 3" in spots).

Careful out there!

There's another post about this but here's my update from the weekend. 13" of ice off the main landing. only a handful of people out. Was out both saturday and sunday. Saturday managed 1 little perch, Sunday a small walleye, a 15" largemouth, and a crappie. Slow going.

THey stocked the lake with little eyes again so its tough finding the decent fish. Going to move the wheel house around a bit this week to see where I can find a bite.

was out few times by the county park. would get a nice crappie or 2 then tons of small walleye and perch. would see a bigger walleye, bass, catfish go by every once in awhile but no takers. i would also like to know where/how to find all those mature eyes. i was also out mid week twice about halfway from south landing to county park in 11 FOW and caught a handful nice crappies both times. same story with perch and walleye. let me know if you find the big eyes

Tried goodahl landing 3 weeks ago. Had the same results I'm getting off the main south landing. Lots of little eyes and perch. Random crappie once in awhile. Nothing consistent at all. Even caught a bullhead.

Lots of traffic in my area now, but i guess that's what happens when the road is plowed to your house!

Good luck if you venture to the other landings.

is your house one of the 2 permanents? thanks for the plowed road smile. i was fishing to the se about 30 yds. sorry if i got too close. only had my car. so is it true that there are good sized eyes in hanska? i'm gonna be out there later this week searching if not too much snow as ill have my car again. are they congregated somewhere or just spread out and need to use bigger bait? i would see on my camera a bigger eye come thru about every hour and grab a small perch.

Yep, I would be the green one. Haven't been out in a few days and going to need to plow the road out again. I haven't caught a decent eye yet this year. They are in there, they're just hard to find, especially now with the stocking of the little ones again. Lots of people fishing in the county park area (closer to the point) but I'm not sure what they're catching. Going to move around this weekend to try and find some.

Citycountryboy

Fished Gieger Point on Monday for about three hours 1 Walleye and 2 Crappies. Plastics for the Crappies, Fathead for the Walleye. Not many fish marked. talked with a couple fellas and they said the Walleyes were going on Sat. before the cold front set in. Crappies caught were on the drop after a aggressive jig action.

I was out there before the cold front Saturday with my 4 year old daughter. She caught a handful of 6" walleyes on her first ever trip out. We ended up with about 16 walleyes caught, all 6-7". Once the front hit at 5pm, they quit being active.

Glad to hear there has been some success out there! I moved my house off after being frustrated with the little eyes and lack of other action.

Anybody try it for opener? I have some days off this week and was thinking of giving it a try. Want to see if its worth the hour drive.

I can't speak for any of the other 100 or so boats out there. But it was really slow for me. Fished west end sat. one bite no fish. East end sunday, nothing.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
