I was looking thru the old posts for the month of November and didn't see much activity. I hunt deer during the regular firearms season within a reasonable drive of LOW. We always take a full week off for hunting, but either have our deer or are tired of sitting in stands all day by about Monday or Tuesday. I was thinking of bringing the boat along this year and taking a day or two fishing. Does anyone brave the elements and go out this time of year? What's it like? I have been fishing four mile and the river the past two years around the opener and will be making my first open water trip to the reefs and open water next weekend. I've been studying my map so I'm somewhat familiar with the key areas on the lake, but definitely still an amateur. Any suggestions and areas to think about trying would be appreciated. I have enough boat to travel if it makes a difference that time of year. Thanks in advance.

Oooooh ya, that fall fishing is great! I've fished LOTW all my 41 years and I probably like the fall fishing the best. The Emerald Shiners start showing up in the river around mid September and the Walleyes are right behind them. The fishing just gets better and better into and thru October. Weather permitting the fishing in November is usually red hot. Some of my most memorable fall fishing has been during the zone 2 deer rifle season {I don't rifle hunt}. Fall is a time of many big fish, and good numbers of fish up here. You won't have to travel far from the Wheeler's access at all....The whole lower end of the river, 4-mile, and the area around the gaps have plenty of fish to be caught. Jig and a Shiner minnow and you're in the business. I have a place right near Wheeler's access and I'm up there alot spring and fall, let me know when you may be around and I'll keep my eyes peeled for you and maybe say hello.
I'm tired of the heat wave....Bring on the Fall fishing and the early ice season!
Fisky

Thanks for the reply fisky, I was hoping you'd say that. Now I'm really looking forward to this trip. Did I see you mention in a previous post that you were going to be renting ice houses this year? If you are I'd be interested. In any event, send some contact info if you don't mind to [email protected] and I'll look you up. Also, Labor Day weekend there will only be two of us in the boat, I'll have plenty of room for you if you want to join us. We'll be staying at Arnesens that weekend.

Fisky,
You have mail. Thanks for the info and I hope to meet you at Arnesens.

Let me join Fisky with the thumbs up for
fall fishing. I will boat fish till freeze
up. Most of it within eyesight of the Lighthouse or Morris Point Gaps. If it gets
windy I will fish the River but I like to
fish the lake if possible.
I quit hunting deer almost 10 years ago and
picked up the fall fishing bug to replace
the deer dragging.
Dress for it and its awesome!

------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Another point to make is that the emerald shiners run up the Rainy River and those big walleyes seem to follow right along.
If you get into some of the neck down or restricted areas on the Rainy River, you can be into walleye heaven.
When you're up there. Stop by Clementson Resort (7 miles east of Baudette). Sandee can fill you in on some of the better places to try.
She's probably booked solid for the month of October, possibly even November. The fishing is GOOD. I know I'll be up there in October.
[This message has been edited by Rick (edited 08-21-2003).]

Thanks for the all the replys guys. If the three of you say the fishing is good, I guess thats good enough for me.
Fisky, I got your e-mail and sent you another one. I did have the wrong address.
Curt, is it safe to assume your show is on KTRF in Theif River. What time are you on, maybe I can tune in after Big Red in the morning.

Josh, I got your mail, then tried sending another back at you and something went screwy and it got lost somehow so I'll try again after a bit. One day when your up will be a go for sure, like I said my partners unconfirmed so Saturday could work if you don't do that tourney. Call Rock harbor for more info on their tourney iffin you have an interest. From the description of your boat I think I saw you guys on the water back in May around the timeframe of the PWT tourney, can't remember which day as I fished 8 days straight, but I saw a boat identical complete with the sticker you described. I think I've seen it on the water a few times. Was that you up here then? Where's your hunting land located?
Fisky
Forgot....Curts show is on KKAQ 1460 AM, and KKDQ 99.3 on the FM radio.

[This message has been edited by fiskyknut (edited 08-22-2003).]

Fisky,
Yes we were up there over the opener. At that time there was actually two boats that were identical. My dad and I each bought one from the same lodge and we had both of them up there at that time. He had his painted since then but mine still looks the same. Our hunting land is east of the Strathcona and Middle River area.

Actually, the fishing show is on at 6:05 am
AND 3:10pm Monday thru Friday.
I am on KKAQ and KKDQ the same time Big Red
is on KTRF. With the new world of radio and
corporate ownership, Big Red is right across
the hallway from me in our wonderful new
facility here in Thief River.

[This message has been edited by curt quesnell (edited 08-23-2003).]

You called for it. The north wind blew strong today. The ice was disappearing fast. Pictures below are from 4:30pm and 8:20pm. Just a small sheet of ice left in the south-east bay. Should be gone by tomorrow. Think I will put the boats in the water tomorrow. I have never eaten smelt before. Will be interesting to see how I like them. I'm waiting for the call to help clean them. Have never done that before either. Need not be present at the smelt fry to win, unless you want to make sure I don't lose your $2,500. Drawing will take place live online on May 18th.

On the South Shore... The focus along the south shore is watching the ice disappear from back bays, big pike sliding into the bays and ditches for the spawn and of course ice out on the main lake (Big Traverse Bay). From now until the Minnesota Fishing Opener on May 10th, anglers will be targeting northern pike (and sturgeon on the Rainy River). Ditches are running and shallow bays are starting to pop open. Now is the time when the big pike are moving in, staging for the upcoming spawn. This is a great spring fishing opportunity not available in most parts of the state. Various techniques for spring pike are effective. A dead bait under a bobber, casting spoons or trolling shallow crankbaits all can be effective. However you fish, shallow bays along the south shore such as Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are a prime spot to hook into a true trophy. The pike limit on the Minnesota side of Lake of the Woods is three fish per day. All pike between 30 and 40 inches must be released, but one pike over 40 inches can be kept. Many anglers choose to take measurements and photos, release their fish, and order a replica mount to remember the catch. All great options! On the Rainy River... Now that walleye season is closed, sturgeon fishing is in full swing and the bite is very good. Anglers are catching solid numbers of these prehistoric giants. Some of the feeder creeks have opened up, increasing the current. That added flow has lowered visibility of the water a bit, but sturgeon primarily feed by scent, so fishing has not been affected. Most anglers are using 4 to 6-ounce no roll sinkers with their sturgeon rigs to stay on the bottom in the heavier current. A typical sturgeon rig includes an 18-inch leader, a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook, and baited with nightcrawlers, or crawlers paired with frozen emerald shiners. Local bait shops and resorts are well-stocked with everything you’ll need. The sturgeon season is open through May 15th. Here are the upcoming dates to keep in mind: Catch and Release Season: May 8 – May 15, and again October 1 – April 23. Harvest Season: April 24 – May 7, and July 1 – September 30. Closed Season: May 16 – June 30. Up at the Northwest Angle... Progress is being made with more and more open water this week. Other than some local airboats, travel on the ice is pretty much done. The focus is on the upcoming open water season. Resorts and area guides are already preparing. Based on the ice fishing season, expectations for fishing success naturally are high. Lake of the Woods is healthy. Now’s the time to plan your spring or summer fishing trip!

Most medium sized lakes around grand rapids went ice free today. Closer to bigfork they still have ice pulled away from shore. Turtle by Marcell is still pretty covered but that's a big deep lake

hookmaster.....our cabin is 7 miles west of talmoon. what lake would that be???? there's a fella on another site many may know, is a dr. posted some small lakes in the area opened up completely last week.......he's between and rapids and Marcell. that white is a good possibility the top is is nothing more then very honeycombed ice. i've been watching several webcams up there 1 being on bowstring and that ice is moving away from shore more everyday. that ice turned from very dark to whiteish also!!!!

I was out in a boat on Minnetonka on March 28th. Only a handful of bays were ice free. That lake maxed out at ~24" of ice this winter where I fished. Talked to a friend in the Grand Rapids area and he said the lake where his parent's cabin is near Talmoon is still white and not pulling away from shore yet, and the cabin is on the east side!!

Blow you son-a-batch blow! We need wind now! 🤣 Oh, how do they make their Smelt, I like um really crunchy! Maybe I'll swing by for some smelt when I pick up my $2,500! 😎 🤭

So, your saying I an't gona win! 🤣

26 inches of ice still? Man, that's ridiculous. The lakes have been open by me since April 1. It's amazing how much of a difference there can be just a few hours away.
