I'm a rookie to open water Lake of the Woods walleyes and was wondering if I could get some advice. I'll be in Baudette this weekend with a few other rookies. We don't have downriggers so my first question is where should we start looking for fish?
Should we pull crawler/spinners in the open water or stick to humps and reefs?
What about crank baits?
Is anyone willing to give up some hot spots???
Thanks for any help.

FishHawk,
If you can find your way out to the lake
you will have very little doubt where you
could start. You will see boats strung
from LightHouse Gap to Morris Point Resort
out in th 25 to 28 foot depth range.
They will be Crankin and Riggin and catchin
fish. You will catch more fish on Cranks
but Spinners or Live Bait Rigs will work too.
It would be worth it to spend the late
afternoon near (on top of) some rocks. Thats
all I will say about that.
You should have a great trip.
Good Luck
------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Reef Runners have been very hot for me lately. 120' of 14# fireline + 3 mph GPS = 26' give or take a foot. Make sure you tune them to get the most depth out of them.
later,
toddb

The reefs have been good with either a jig and a worm or a spinner and a worm. I have been fishing more by Warroad and you can catch fish in about 10 to 15 feet of water.

Well I just got back from LOW. We fished about 4 miles out from the gap. We found all our fish in 32 feet of water.. we were down rigging with balls set at 20 feet and were useing gray and black raps and blue and silver raps. They were running about 7-9 feet so that would put them around 27-30 feet. We did well. We took home 14 fish mixed eyes and saugers. Got some real nice ones too. Biggest was 24". I ended up hooking up with Shelden Lorenson from WI.
If you do not have down riggers you can use lead core line. That works well too. I have even used catfishing weights to get me down there and it worked. We were going much slower than the launches and we got more fish too.
Good luck and be careful with the wind.. that water can be diffrent in a matter of 10 minuets. I went from calm to 4 foot rollers in about 10 minuets.
Rod tips up.........
------------------
Wiskers Guiding Service
Red River & Minnesota RIver Channel Cats, Flatheads & Walleyes
Crookston, MN
[email protected]
218-280-0442
