Got out there last night for a few hours. Popped some holes, found fish on the Vex at about 14 feet. We set everything up and then BAM...everything went dead around 6pm.

We still had a good time and each managed half a dozen crappies.

I need to get back out there and try to decipher this 'nigh bite' thing!

Gonna try to get further away from the pack next time and see what's going on.

Watch your gear out on wb. Augers are being stolen right outside occupied houses.

A friend of mine was out on White Bear yesterday with a group. It seems that a Green Jeep Cherokee drove up, some guy jumped out and grabbed one of the group's Strikemaster augers, and jumped back in their Jeep and took off.

It's a darn shame that kids have to witness this kind of garbage. Bring out a bike lock, and lock stuff up in your cars.

Stay safe and keep an eye out for suspicious behavior.

You gotta be kidding ?!? What is next ? Sounds like a good place for a CO to set up a sting. Leave a bunch of gear laying out for bait and pop these ( very, very ,very bad words ) !

Funny thing, there was a CO or Sheriff at the access yesterday. Guess he could've been responding to the stolen auger though. Hopefully that wouldn't happen while he was on the lake.

I set up in 15 FOW at the south end of the lake, missed a couple hits and had something come off the bottom to have a look at my minnow a few times. Pretty slow but guess I should expect that setting up in a random spot trying to get lucky.

Anyone else use a lakemaster chip on White Bear? It was useless for me, seemed to be atleast 10 feet off everywhere I went.

I was out Monday late afternoon just north of Manitou Island. The water seemed cloudy and the camera was limited to what looked to be a 3 ft range. Anyone else notice this? First time out on WBL this year but it seems that it was a lot more clear last year over by Ramsey Beach.

This was the first year I had to bust out the stained lake color lures for the Bear. It will be interesting to see what this summer brings.

Hey everyone I'm new to this site since I recently moved up from Iowa. I was just looking for any tips on Ice Fishing on White Bear Lake. I have fished this lake several times this year in areas east or west of the crowds at Bellaire Beach and have had ok numbers but lots of small fish. Let me know if you have any information or tips and stay safe.

Caught a ton of sunnies in 18 FOW and then they all disappeared from the flasher. Dropped down a northland hd blugil spoon with a fathead and BAM! a 40+ inch Muskie with 2lbs line and 8 min later finally got it out ofthe hole. Fun day to be out

Nice!! I was fishing out there last week and we were catching sunnies and crappies, when my buddies line started peeling out after reeling up something small. I was assuming it was a muskie, he fought it for about 10 mins and then on the way to the hole his line went limp. Snapped his line. Bummer we never got to see it.

Wow! The pressure out there is off the wall, I'v been ice fishing White Bear quite a bit the last few years. I have never seen this amount of fishermen/women out there before. Is everyone catching fish? I just wonder because everyone seems so smashed together, why? I'v been staying away from the crowds and doin allright.

My question to people is: Are people actually catching fish all smashed together in those little villiges?

It is pretty crazy with that town off of bellaire.. When I fish there I usually try to stay away from the crowd and still do ok too. I don't know how the bite is there but it must be hot. Last year was pretty packed too.

Are driving conditions pretty good out there? I don't have access to my truck this week, so I'm hoping I'd be able to get around in a car.

Also, which seems to do better for tip up pike on WBL...big lively shiners or frozen dead bait?

I was out last Monday and there were some areas where the snow was a bit deep and I got a bit anxious with my 2 WD F150. I was out on the north end from Ramsey Beach to just north of Manitou Island. I had 2 tips out with smelt and one with a mouse I had caught in a trap and nothing happened at all. The mouse was an experiment that just sort of showed up as I was packing up to go out,

Was out Today fishing 8 fow and managed only 2 keepers. A 9.5 inch pumpkinseed sunfish and a 10 3/4 inch crappie after sorting through 30 or so sunnies and crappies. Did see a ginormous musky cruised by guessing around mid 40s to 50 inch.

Thanks IBFishin2. Looks like I will be walking out this afternoon.

I saw cars getting to the same spot my truck was at. Just stick to the main roads, then walk from there.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
