winterkill on schoolgrove

Recommended Posts

Only saw 1 walleye and 1 crappy when I checked SG today. Got a bad feeling the walleyes were dead before the water started running and made oxygen for the carp to "hoard to", but I geuss time will tell. Heard anything about test netting to see if anything is left?

not the main lake but one of the back sloughs had dead minnows in it. i have a funny feeling that the netting out all those carp might have saved a few gamefish that swam back to the areas that 90% of the carp were removed from smirk just a thought. because the tiles on the south side of the lake have no fish in them and the one has a good 3 foot drop over rocks bring highly oxegnated water into the lake and the 26" outlet in the north east bay is running full, there have been no fish sucked aginst the screen. YET smile anyone have any good ice out guesses? i say 3 to 4 more warm days and it will bust up on most lakes.

I drove by SG also yesterday- saw one eye and about 15 crappies, otherwise just carp and channels.

I have a bad feeling that the gamefish died a while ago and went to the bottom.

After seeing all those carp and rough fish I don't know that this can hurt the lake down the road.

hi Im one of the commercial fishermen who seined on school grove this winter. I figured I would make everyone feel better about this winter kill by telling you there was not many game fish in this lake beside some catfish, crappie, and very few small walleyes. We took over 100,000 pounds of rough fish out of the lake and only put a dent in them we where hoping to come in this fall and take the rest out but the hard winter took care of them instead.

I'm from Marshall and I heard that the sportsman's club had an aerator out there...but it didn't work when they put it in. IF this really was the case, a big part of the blame would go to the sportsman's club. HOWEVER, from what I could see of SG and the fishing I've done there growing up, this was probably a good thing for the lake. Give the lake a chance to start over and stock it with walleye and crappie, throw some NOP and maybe a couple muskie in a few years down the road if the bullhead problem comes back (a lot of bullheads before die off). Natural disturbances like these are normal for lakes and usually benefit them in the long run...don't get your undies in a bunch just yet, lets see what comes out of this first.

Anyone here of other lakes in the Marshall area that had significant winterkills? Some of the O2 levels looked pretty low in february.

Typically bullheads will be the longer lived species during low O2 winterkill levels.

At first glance this may be bad, but long term this isn't as bad as many may think.

Think bait.

Winterkills have been happening in these shallow lakes for long before we've all been here. Yeah, it's a drag to see floating sportfish but let mother nature work her magic here and we'll see what happens come May.

all these are since ice out last spring. we have probably caught and released 100 crappie this summer along with 80 catfish.

Remember the sportsmans club also has to pay to run O2 systems in that lake, and buy the system. Have you ever priced one of those out? Many clubs struggle to keep the funds to simply operate. Don't be too harsh on them. Memberships are key. Join a club like this today and make a difference. If you don't like what they are doing, become more involved in the club and expand your voice.

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
