I see a lot of dead carp in those pictures. Is there anything else sportfish wise that died?

I don't know anything about the lake, but appears to be all carp from what i can tell. It probably costs a good deal to put in a aeration system and to maintain it. depending on the size of the club may not have the funds to do it. Also some of the lakes that do have one in are still dying off cause of all the snow cover we have had this year. Its hard to keep a shallow lake alive. Hard to see any lake die off during the winter. To me the best point is getting rid of all the carp and starting over with a fresh start of game fish. just my little oppinion

many large catfish, nice walleyes, perch, sunfish, FULL of 11" crappie, bull heads, tiger muskies, carp, redhorse sucker, buffalo and a few pike.

I think it was carp lake. Why not post the lake name? This has been happening for years on certain lakes. It is sad to see. Is this lake your hot spot for next year,

same question asked on other forum thread, what lake?

schoolgrove in sw mn. it is about 400 acres with a max of 11.6 feet. yes there were tiger muskies in there. my grandpa has a pic of one when hes standing on our dock. was a very very very very productive walleye, crappie and catfish lake if you hit it at the exact right time.

Are you a member of your local club? To me that would be the best place to start voicing your opinion. Looks like alot of carp to me too you would be surprised how fast a fishery can turn around after a winterkill.

It looks like School Grove. This lake had a large harvest of carp earlier in the winter. Could this be related to that event?

That's really too bad. Even though I rarely fish the lake, I hate to see this happen.

sad to see all thoughs fish dead... but you gotta let nature do its thing... as long as thats the cause?

Thats a real bummer. Its terrible to see all of those fish die.

Maybe a positive side would be getting a fresh start without the carp. It seems to me like it might be a good time to load it up with rotenone (sp) and start over.

there was game fish in the hole before they opened it to liberlized fishing. i havent really seen anything other than a TON of walleye fry in one of the tile inlets lately. find out soon how bad it was, maby just maby. it was the carp being carp and swimming in great quanity to the inlet holes depeleting the O2 in that area. as i dropped an under water camera and didnt really see anything other than a few crappie and minnows laying aginst the ice in the 10 holes i dropeed it down.

Broken Line-

I was out there a few times early winter. Did they ever have an areator going?

I hope its not too bad, I thought that lake was going to be great this spring.

Pictures must be from the West side of lake, by the landing across from Somerfelds(public access side). Areator was always off the point straight accross. What a shame to see. The muskies were stocked in the early/mid 90's I beleive, to help rid all the bullheads. Back then it was just a bullhead hole and a occasional walleye.

they havent put an airator in the lake in the past 6 winters. everything is there for it so i dont really see why it wasnt put in smirk

Is the lake good for waterfowl? A lot of times the DNR won't issue and airator permit if a lot of waterfowl use the lake. It might be a good thing for the lake that all those roughfish died. For both water quality and the other fish in the lake.

the reason you see mainly carp is because carp are typically the last to go... they can breathe oxygen from the atmosphere to some extent and they made the voyage to open water to do so. that being said all other game fish are dead and it will be a couple years at the least to get this thing pumping out fish. I think that the DNR or sportsmans club maybe wanted this to happen as it is best for the fishery to start over. there was such a high number of carp and other rough fish. I also live near the lake and it has not been a good walleye lake at all so i dont know what some of you are talking about in that aspect? unless you catch a 24incher twice a year and a bunch of little ones. There is an areator in the lake but it is broken and has not been repaired.

Very sad! Didn't the DNR open it up to open fishing at any means like they do for some lake in this state? confused

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
