Saturday we went out to ######## Reef and <BR>tried pulling some plugs in the deep water<BR>adjacent to the rock pile. That was a bust<BR>so we anchored just off the reef and used<BR>slipbobbers with leeches or crawlers for a<BR>half hour with no result.<P>There were 4 or 5 boats on top of the reef<BR>that suddenly turned into 9...then 12. They<BR>were only a hundred yards away from us so <BR>we moved over to check it out.<P>There was an area 20 yards in each direction<BR>with 5 boats working the area catching big<BR>fish after big fish. I know I saw over 100<BR>3 to 7 pound walleyes caught in just a couple<BR>of hours.<P>These 5 boats nearly always had at least <BR>one fish on, often 2 or 3 fish at the same<BR>time. They all must have been to boat <BR>control school because nobody left the 20 <BR>yard square honey hole even for a minute<BR>for the next 2 hours.<P>The rest of the boats were fishing close <BR>by, catching some big fish but nothing like<BR>these 5 boats were doing. Mid afternoon<BR>the "big 5" moved out to let others into <BR>hot zone. <P>It was 3 pm before I finally caught a Walleye. It was a 24 incher that we put<BR>back. A few minutes later I got a 26 incher<BR>that we also put back. I didnt see a regular<BR>sized fish caught until almost 4 pm.<P>It seemed that most of the fish were going<BR>back. It also seemed that most fishers were<BR>taking their time hauling these bigguns in.<BR>I saw only one fish floating and it was a <BR>small Walleye about 10 inches long.<P>It was fun to watch all those people fishing<BR>this small tight area. Everyone was having<BR>a great time, nobody complained when lines<BR>would tangle with lines from other boats or<BR>if someone got too close to another boat.<P>The "5" protected their turf pretty well by<BR>just not drifting out of the zone and politely not giving up the spot until they<BR>were ready.<P>The real bad part of the day was the one<BR>complete hour that the fishing gods decided<BR>I should be snagged up and breaking lines<BR>again and again. After an hour of that things settled down and I didnt break another<BR>line for the rest of the day.<P>This is getting long but there are a couple<BR>more things. My electronics showed fish<BR>stacked in the deep water next to and near<BR>the reef that would not bite. The depth<BR>finder showed zero fish up in the rocks<BR>where all the fish were getting caught.?????<P>A couple of friends of mine were downrigging<BR>in the area and eventually caught some fish<BR>and a few big ones to boot. <P>This big fish run was a sight to behold. I wont soon forget seeing these whoppers caught or the way everyone behaved and had fun being a part of it. <P>There are only a handful of lakes on the <BR>planet where this sort of thing is even<BR>possible. I have seen it three or four times<BR>on Lake of the Woods now and it is a huge<BR>thrill for a Walleye head like me.<BR> <P><P>------------------<BR>Curt Quesnell<BR>NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

how exciting. i'm really glad to hear that folks were practising catch and release. I saw a similar sight back in 1971 on the seagull river on the opening of fishing. Unfortunately those were the days when few knew of the benefits to catch and release. That day i saw many very heavy stringers of fish. That particular body of water is now closed to fishing until the fish have spawned and moved out. (The year after i was there Leroy Chiviotte caught his state record walleye (17-8)there and his other five fish all over 12 pounds. I am very glad sportsmen today have the ethic to realize that nothing lasts forever

Late last week out from Light House gap there were a couple of guys who were in the middle of all the down riggers and were pulling spinners and crawlers on bottom bouncers and were triggering alot of big fish. Although they were not getting the numbers of fish the launches were they caught 5 between 27-28 inches in a short period of time. Something to think about next time....

Great to hear! Heading to the angle this weekend...maybe a guy should head south (MN) rather than the usual north(ON). <P>------------------<BR>Hemlock<BR>"Throw'm back"

Hi Curt, just found this site. My nephew and his girlfriend and I were there when all of this was going on. We were in the Bayliner. I said hi to you as you were adding more lures to your line as you said you had been busy doing this quite often that day.<BR> Just after I had Talked to you, I caught and released a 28 in. walleye. I, in my entire life of fishing, had never seen so many huge walleyes taken and released from one small area. It was a joy to see those fish being returned to the water. As you said, the few boats that were there, were not giving up their spots on that small reef, but then, who could have blamed them.<BR> We fished the outside of the reef and had a couple of misses, then the 28 incher. caught a couple of smaller fish. What a great day of fishing. Just my thoughts.

carknocker,<P>It isnt something you soon forget!<P>Lake of the Woods is such a great fishery<BR>and when the fish get going on the rocks<BR>amazing days that happen more often than<BR>you might think.<P>There is a reason a guy will sit there and<BR>tie 10 lines in 20 minutes (GRRRRR).<P>The fall bite in the gaps and the river is<BR>much the same, an awesome chance to catch<BR>many big fish in a short period of time<P>------------------<BR>Curt Quesnell<BR>NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
