A group of 106 High School Seniors, and chaperones, are on their way to Sea Gull Lake right now. These young adults will be there until Sunday morning.

My son is one of them. He will be snowshoeing to the campsite on snowshoes that he made himself as a part of 'Outdoor Adventures' class, and pulling his pulk behind him.

If you see them, honk!!

Wow! Awesome! When I read the subject line of your post, I was thinking "oh-oh, a bunch of HS graduates are looking to party hardy on Lake One in June, raise some he11, drink beer, etc, etc." But this sounds awesome! I wish I had that opportunity when I was in school, so many years ago. Congratulations to the 'Outdoor Adventures' class, their leaders and administrators! What school district? This is how we encourage the next generation to appreciate the natural resources and activities we love, protect, and try to pass on to the next stewards of the land. 106 students?!?!! Are they taking any fishing equipment, augers? Camping on the ice? How many overnights, one or two? Seagull is so beautiful...but at this time of year I doubt if they will be able to climb to the top of the Palisade. Post a bunch of pictures when they get back. Sign them up as members, too! Keep us posted!

I also found a joke in my mind when I saw the title. Something along the lines of: "Yikes, a bunch of teens with an older person or two to lead them into the BWCA. Avoid BASSWOOD and leave the guns and drinks behind!" crazy

Your post is much better than my evil mind. Hope those folks have a phenomenal time up there. A great weekend to be camping. Maybe a bit of rain, but such warm temps in early-mid March are a Godsend. A great learning experience, and wishing the best of times to your son and everyone involved. Skoal! smilesmile

Very nice! That is a great school district and a very great curriculum! I guess I'm kind of assuming they made their snowshoes in a class?? Are they metal and synthetics, or the old classic bent wood/rawhide style? My friend at work has a daughter who came through the Maple Grove school district and she got to do some very cool outdoor activities, not the least of which was building igloos for overnight camping. She is now in college, majoring in Natural Resources and currently sandbagging the Red River (she's a cutie, and an athlete...hint, hint, you young guys!). As the old Hannay's billboard in Minneapolis used to say..."it's better to take your kid hunting, than to go hunting for your kid"!

This is totally NOT cool. 106 kids on one lake in the BWCAW. I know this group broke many, many rules of the BWCAW last year (didn't have enough permits, didn't stay in groups of nine (imagine 106 kids all in one spot), littered HORRIBLY). Why can't they split up on to different lakes? I am calling the USFS to report this activity-be warned. This is everything that the BWCAW is not supposed to be about. Their behavior last year was appalling.

H2O Milfoil - They do have fishing equipment with them and are camping on shore. They were going to build quinzhees (sp?), but the weather put a damper on that. The snowshoes that he made are the bent wood style. They got the materials with instructions in class, but he pretty much did them on his own at home. They are laced with shoe-laces and then dipped in varnish. He also did some woodburning on the top of them. They are pretty cool. I will post pictures when he returns.

Gunflint Guy - I do know that "this group" was not there last year. I also know that 106 kids are not camping "in one spot". If you have some documentation to support your accusations, I would like to see it.

H2O Milfoil - My daughter is currently a Junior at Concordia College in Moorhead. She was living in the dorms last year, and she helped sandbag until the school closed. She was disappointed to have to come home.

And she is right back at it already this year. The sandbagging has begun!!

I am proud of her for doing this, without me suggesting that she should.

IMO...Not allowing kids to expirience the outdoors is NOT cool. I think everyone would agree with me that we can trust the parents/chaperones to keep them under control and within the rules of the BWCA.

Hope they have a blast! Some pics and stories would be cool to hear when they return home. I'm interested in how those snowshoes hold up!

Plus, there is a part of Sea Gull lake that is NOT inside of the OFFICIAL BWCAW.

I'd say simmer down. They probably are not going inside of the BWCAW, and if they do, I'm sure they will break up the group accordingly.

I hope they have a blast! That's a field trip of a life time for them!

Dude. give em a chance. Are you saying you were never in there shoes as a new-bee. I love the BWCAW as much as the next, but can't stand the snobs that think its theirs and theirs only. That my friend....is appalling

I had a group of 45 pass my camp last March, but they spaced it out over a couple hours and traveled in troops of 9. Well, I'm pretty sure they were the same group. So big groups can do it, there are just some minor guidelines to follow.

Hey Fish Novice...

You are a great parent and you have a great daughter and a great son! You have a right to be proud!

Our kids are our future. Our kids will inherit our public resources. Our kids will be the next generation stewards of our lands. Our kids will be voting for the future of our resources. Our kids will inherit our management laws and hopefully be able to make it work even better for their descendents. We only borrow the land from our kids. Teach our children well...

Reading the title I thought someone had run into Jr. and his buddy. They spent 4 days camped out earlier this week, taking advantage of their Spring Break and the warmer weather. They skied in pulling their gear on plastic tobaggans, and spent their waking hours searching out and catching lake trouts.

This is their second multiple-night expedition in the last month, and they seem to be getting the hang of cold-weather camping.

106 kids? Holy Hannah, the logistics just boggle the mind....

Jackpine Rob: Yeah, I was thinking what it would be like, sittin' out on the ice, fishing, seeing this gang coming my way. Some people would be, like, OMG, they're destroying my wilderness! I think I would be one of the people who would go up and ask if there is anything I can do to help, or to make their trip even more fun!

His snowshoes might be slinging water and his pulk might be floating crazy

Hopefully they stayed dry.

I was a chaperone on this trip and two other years. This is a fantastic trip for the kids. Like people have been saying, these kids are the future of our out doors. The trip went great, however wet and miserable it was for the first couple days. By the third day kids spirits were high having over come the major obstacles that wet, winter camping throws at you. Over all GREAT trip though. Kids caught a lot of nice fish and learned a great life lesson along with hopefully taking away new appreciation of the woods.

And EVERYTHING he brought home smelled like that wood smoke. Took a few days to air out his tent.

They all had a good time, and there were no issues at all!!

MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

      Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
