I do for one, I move around alot in a 45 mile stretch off shore.

Opener?

grin

I have to agree with dtro on this. Opener? I havent fished walleyes on opener in 10 years I bet. Opening day is for rookies. If it is nice out, I will be found on the water, chasing either cats, or carp, and if a walleye happens to bite my bait, inwhich they always do, I will just throw it back, nothing special about a certain day.

Ah, opener is a great minnesota outdoorsmans day - great tradition!

I guess me along with majority are rookies.

I guess what I mean is, there is about 300 other days of the year to go fish, and fishing isnt any better on opener, as it is on anyone of them other days. And when your fish of choice, doesnt have an opening day, it just isnt as exciting.

I like to hide out on the river and chase cats on opener. Too many retards on the lakes that weekend.

I think opener is one of the best fishing weekends on the river actually,

Yeah I hear ya when your species of choice has no close or open date.

Be careful what you wish for, 4WE. We've got a lot of laws already. I've caught a LOT of channel cats this winter.

I like river fishing and catfishing, but there's no reason to be arrogant. The guy was simply asking a question and wasn't looking for smart ash remarks.

I would like to be on the MN river but will probably be up north on Winnie/Cutfoot or 11th crow wing.

I used to never miss it...it was like Christmas and Deer Hunting. I used to always hit Leech.

Now I have a cabin on Lake Amelia so we usually hit the lake for 3-4 hours and that is about it.

I have fished and partied on 8th Crow wing my whole life lot's of good times up in that area.

Different strokes for different folks.

Walleye opener for me is at that the top of list for favorite weekends. We have about 35 of us spread out in various Family and friends Cabins on BSL.

Fishing's never great and they're always small when we do get em but we don't care we do the Pig-Roast, Keg and Sunday Fish Fry thing and all is well!

Life-long Friends and family get together's can't be beat.

Normally at this time I'm chomping at the bit for some Eye action but that early season Eye Bonanza on the Sippi and Sota sure made that dreadfully long winter go away in a hurry!

I stayed up there for quite a few years for deer hunting.

Awesome you got a permit! Hopefully the weather is nice and all the flood waters dries up! I try to always apply for an april time slot. Too many times out in may where the skeeters were way to thick NOT FUN

yea I ussally hunt the first season but forgot to enter for a permit, to much stuff going on and spaced it out. I will have the boys out in the first couple seasons up here and there fired up.

If the weather stays on track and it starts to hit 70 plus you wont be safe from skeeters in April either

Years ago I opened the season driving way up north and playing bumper boats with thousands of other folks. Its was a circus and I though it was kind of fun.

When I guided for cats, I sometimes had to miss opener. The cats are in prespawn and very hungry. One of the best times to go catfishing!

In recent years when I did fish the opener, I fished near home on the river. I'd go out for a couple hours in the morning and go home get some yard work done then head back out for a couple hours in the evening.

What a great way to start the walleye season. No long drive, no crowds, no hours of catching nothing, and no skunk!

  • 1 month later...

I've been hearing some reports of nice walleyes being caught by the cat dudes on big bullheads. The conditions are pretty good for the walleye opener this weekend.

Good luck MN river fishers!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
