Hey crappiekeith, do you guys keep those big perch? I kept some out of that lake last week and they were full of white worms! I would much rather clean and eat them jumbos rather than them "blade wreckin" Bullgills, but couldnt feed something with those parasites in it to my family.

Get a map like I have....look for deep water and bore holes.

I like to work around shallow flats that have the food sources those tullies are looking for to feed on.

Just wondering if any of you guys are using fresh water shrimp up there, I had a guy come up and tell me that the shrimp were swiming in masses in lake, all the tullies that i caught were full of shrimp also the perch were full of them too.

I thought that they were mayflys but others are telling me they are shrimp, it looks like both so maybe there are both in there.

Shrimp right now but the mayflys will come about the time the snow starts to met.

I had fun today....

I'd throwe back that 13" but then it might be just below if ya closed it's mouth.

It'll only be a few years until that 10" year class we caught all last year get's to that size.

Struggled last time out to find the tullies but the crappies bit pretty good.Released several around 13 kept a few in that 10-12...there was also a good showing of 8-9 inch so there's another good year class up and coming.

I talked to some guys last weekend and the crappies are shut off but some tullies biting. I would rather ride in the woods then waste my time on bsl right now. Way too many people for the lake. Riding is great though.

The bite is alright if you can find them stacked. Then again I'm seeing guys with large baits trying to hit crappies.

That ain't happening,I know I was way over 50 for the day...the bite seemed pretty good to me.Then again I don't listen to what others say.....it's the tullies that can be hit or miss.

Talked to a couple guys earlier today...8 hours on the ice..2 crappies. They were using waxies and hair jigs.

A good friend of my brother in-law who owns land close to BSL says they have been doing very well for limits of crappies in the Bill Horn bay area. I will try and get some more details on what they are doing. I know they had a fish fry this last Tues... I could not attend though.

Well then it looks like they could use some help...I don't use waxies for crappies.Just the hair in a 100th oz.works well.

I know that they have larger jigs which are too big already especially when you are adding a waxie which makes the presentation even larger.I saw that happen to my fishing partner the other day.I was catching 5 to his 1.

All jigs are not created equall...size does matter.Color can too!

One can't assume they were working a very good lift either or were they even trying to lift those fish to their ceiling...who knows some guys are pounders.Finicky fish will ignor pounding.

There are other nuances that help to trigger a strike.Small diameter line,a loop knot and a sensitive spring.

Just because a guy has a flasher and a hair jig does not automatically put fish on the ice.

CK, can a guy buy 100th oz jigs at any bait shop or are they rare and what color are you having luck with. What size line to you typically use? I will not name bays or specifics but many bays on this lake are too packed and I will stay away from those areas.

Thanks CK.

No they are not in the stores. You'll have to make your own.

there are several color combos that work well.

Blue/chart yellow or all black are my favorites.Pink/white has been good and so has orange/ chart yellow.

I found a little hole about the size of my house...it was loaded with stacked crappies.

Crappiekeith,

I think a friend of mine & I ran in to you on Aitkin around mid-January...What do your homemade 100th oz. jigs look like ?? Are they a a "down-sized" leadhead with the hair tied around the collar??

You must use extremely light line, plus a split shot to get the jig down....Is this correct? Thanks for the info

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
