I think it is safe or I wouldnt be driving out there...lol. There was about 17-18" minimum where I was at on 2nd point.

This is always a tough question. Driving on ice is never safe. This time of year thin ice is usually found when you come to a rest at the bottom of the lake in your vehicle.

By weighing the odds, average ice thickness, weight of vehicle, ice quality, amount of snow on the ice, If you can swim or not, are the kids with you, can the kids swim, is the wife with you, do you like her etc, etc, etc
You make the choice of if you should drive out or not.

Those who fish a lake often and move about drilling holes may have a pretty good idea of where it is safe to drive. But there are springs on this lake and carp do school up so there "MAY" be areas that will not support any vehicle.

If you stick to the well traveled road, keep your speed down and stay away from the narrows you should be ok in most any passenger car. But you will never be risk free on the ice.

I remember when I first moved to Mankato a large truck hauling firewood could not make it up the ice covered hill on Washignton Blvd so they choose to drive on the lake.
no need to continue.

Pressure ridges can form anywhere and without warning! The Free Press just today had an article about 4 kids in a Ranger that went through on Gorman. So use caution when driving on any lake and keep your speed down. Have fun catch some fish and stay out of the Free Press. wink.gif

The last 2 guys mention keeping your speed down. I wonder if anyone on Washington will listen?
The past 2 weekends I've been fishing right out from Westwood.....besides the ATV races, I think everyone else must be in a huge hurry to get on/off the lake! It sure would be nice if people would use some common sense once in a while... especially when they drive within 10' of your house...which is another topic altogether.
Besides my little biotch session, I've encountered pretty safe ice (16"-18") on Wash. If you have any kids, go out to the 1st bunch of houses..7'-8' water... drop your line to the bottom, and slowly bring it up...sunnies are thick in there but you have to sort through.
Have fun!!!

Your best source for info on plowed roads on Washington would be Westwood Marina 243- 9998. The owner used to plow a road to Bakers but not sure if he still does.
