hunterdown,

If the river you were at was the French the red truck you saw would have been mine. I was there from about 6:00am until 10:45am. It was a quiet morning for the most part but I did have a little luck.

I am going anyway I dont trust the forecast and think it will be all right when I get there. I hope I am not wasting $75 in truck gas.

That maybe the dumbest thing I have done so far. ( I should have trusted the forecast) I went 16 miles fromthe landing only to find myself in some REAL bad conditions. I have been in some bad waves on Lake Michigan but this act of stupidity topped them all. I did manage to catch 2 coho and a steel head along the way.

I stuck my head out the cheesey side for about maybe a 1/2 hour yesterday and that was enough. The BIG swells in the entry were a wild ride back in!The wind looks even worse today. The trees in my area are really whipping around. Looks like my 2 days off were a bust. frown

Was out yesterday and did ok ended up with 4 coho in 4 hours. lost 2 others. Wind made it fun ride back in. Off park point. Boats ready to go for opener, was glad to get some fish on my first trip out.

Keep your eyes peeled, "Reel Nauti" has been splashed, spent the first day rigging today, should finish her up tomorrow and may be out on Thursday if all goes well. First boat in Barkers for 2010!

Depending on the wind conditions you can launch out of Mcquade Safe Harbor 1/2 way between the Lester and the French. Was up there a couple Saturdays ago and didn't get anything but I would think the water temp s/b coming up so who knows, planning on being back up there myself the first wknd in May.

I had originally planned to try steelheading on the weekend of April 17th along the north shore. I understand the early runoff and lack of rain make the streams low and clear right now, and unless it begins to rain, steelheading that weekend may not be the best.

Any other fishing options I am not aware of that weekend? Other ideas on what to do on a spring weekend in the northland?

I had my mind set on Steelhead, so I need help with other option. Stream trout fishing opens that weekend also. So maybe?

On the lake you can have 2 lines ,,,its only "in" the river you have to have 1 hook and one line

Almost stuck my nose out of the entries this morning ,,,I say almost cuz I couldnt get close enough to stick my nose out at all ,,,oh well maybe tomorrow if the lake lays down a bit ,,the crowd on the pier seems to be thinning too whats up with that???

Ya they say a sw wind tomorrow so that will be good! That Pier bite has slowed a little, plus everyone sees they can get boats out now so....... Also it always seems after that pier bite has gone on for 4 or 5 weeks the crowds thin out.

What part of the northshore are you going to? You can still cast on the big pond (wind permitting) for coho's or loopers. You can still fish the lower rivers for other trout (although they'll be small). One thing is definitely for sure...you can't catch a steelhead if your not there! Above the barriers alot of rivers have decent brook trout fishing.

Shore fishing for cohos or inland for stream trout.

Maybe catch the smelt run at Park Point.

Maiden voyage of the Reel Nauti ended with 5 in the box after 3 hours. Started out running the boat out and setting the idles for trolling so that gave us a late start. After getting all the lines in and setting our course we managed to pick up 2 coho's and a Brown within 30 minutes of setting lines in 40 FOW. Pink herringbone and a blue rap were the producers for the day allowing us to pick up 2 more coho's on our way in over the same coordinates as the first few. Lot's of fish on the graph, not much for takers. Water was clear to chocolate and the traffic was a fricken zoo. Algoma esque' minus everyone staying on the same track. Best fishing for us was right outside of the chocolate in the green tinted water off the dutchman. Temps ranged from 39-44.

Went 8 for 10 today. That was worst/dumbest boat driving/fishing etiquette I have seen on any lake. Lucky its just short stick bait lines off the boards, because if it was full cores it would have been a mess. Tom your 100% right about that Algoma statement.

When I made a statement about having a boat parade form one entry to the other all I remember seeing was a comment about it being a big lake.

My guess is the lake didn't shrink while I was at the cabin for three days!! I for one have no idea on what the edicate should be on the big lake as I may only make it out there once or twice a season.

What are a couple of good tips for others such as myself. I'm not looking for a book worth of comments. Just a couple of good tips. What is the biggest problem most of you come across other then not having the lake to yourself. wink

The biggest issue is when everyone is going every which way. I'm used to combat fishing but usually there is a line/circle route that everyone follows and in the same direction. Saturday when I was out, everyone was going everywhere with no rhyme or reason. People get cut-off, pinched in, etc. But that is just part of fishing when the fish are grouped in tight as they were on Saturday. You just learn to deal with it and keep your eyes open.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
