Loonasea and I met up with walleyehunter80 (Josh) for a day of fishing on Superior. Our plan was to meet at the marina in Cornucopia at around 4:00 and get in a good morning fish. We ended up going 11 for 15 with 1 King and 8 Coho's along with 2 Brown trout. When we got the King it was the fish that made it a true triple in the boat along with the 2 Coho's that Loonasea and I were all ready fighting. What a madhouse in the boat but what a blast. We also has a couple of double's for a very memorable day. We were taking a look at all the cool rock formations and spotted a deer that must have ran off the edge and swam back to shore but needs to move down the shore a bit in order to get back in the woods but it still has not got that part figured out yet.

Yes it is but as you can tell it won't be my last grin

Since we sold the cabin that was north of Grand Rapids I needed to start fishing a little closer to home and I have fished from shore but was always interested in getting my boat out on Superior. I am already planning a few camping trips along the south shore and really would like to get up around Madeline Island for a little sight seeing along with some time washing the lures.

Josh I will email those shots to you and that way you will have my email at the same time.

How deep did you find the fish? Last time out I found them in 55-65' of water. They still in that area?

From 65 to 95 ft of water a few on rigger 20 and 33 down the rest on top. seemed like you needed wind and waves. when it got nice they shut down all different colors of stix on top and spoons on riggers.

Loonasea and his buddy Bill and I headed up to Cornucopia to see if we could duplicate that great luck we had last week. The lake was flat and the water had warmed up a ton in a weeks time. Last week we were at 43 to 47 degrees and this week the coolest we could find was 53. We did manage to get a really nice Brown and 2 Lakers. All were released. We caught the Brown and one of the Lakers on a smelt pattern on top and the other Laker on a Flasher with a green and white tinsel fly right behind the boat in the prop wash. We fish anywhere between 17 and 100 feet of water and most of the fish marks seemed to be on the bottom.

The deer that was fell off the cliff was gone so one can only guess that it swam off and hopefully managed to get back into the woods.

Hey Jim,

Yet another great report... I'm looking forward to getting out with you on Monday if the weather cooperates. Keep your fingers crossed!!

Off topic but is that a store bought mast system or a homemade one?

It looks like that's PVC pipe on the mast

Randy will know for sure but I believe it's a Rivera Brand and that is the way it came from the factory. It plugs into a seat pedestal mount and will wind itself back up when there is no tension from the planer boards.

That is a composit shaft made by Riviera Trolling Systems

Picked it up at the FM swap meet in Twig a few years back

I was out with BD110 today and we went 4 for 6 with 3 Coho and 1 Laker. We fished on the cheesy side anywhere from 50' to 75'. We pulled deep diving plugs and ran 2 dipsy's. The fish hit the smelt pattern plugs and a watermelon spoon behind a flasher. The temps ranged between 57 and 59. You could not have asked for a nicer day to be on the water.

Got out after work this evening. Headed out of the Superior Entry right out to the middle about 6 miles out. Water temps were in the mid-50's ballpark where we were. Fishing was slow out there only managed 1 Laker and missed 1. Half-core lead and a rigger at 40'. Hoping to find a boat load of friends for the weekend if the weather co-operates.

One coho for me out of McQuade last night. Water was easily 5 degrees warmer where I was catching them on Sunday. Ran a little further north to find the 49 degree water. Beautiful evening to be on the water!

Cheffrey, Eric and I got out and I think we wound up with 6 Lakers and 1 king. Seemed like the 4 colors of lead out on a board with bright colored sticks caught the most. We even had one fish hit a dypsie so hard the dypsie passed up the boat! That was the 1st and maybe last time Ill ever see that.

We never found 1 area that had a bunch of fish that would hit.

The laker passing the dipsie was a trip, water really didnt change much the entire trip. Hard to fine workable water until the wind picked up a bit to define the lines. Thanks for coming aboard yesterday Steve, you available to fill a few rod holders on Thursday AM for a short trip to prefish?

Ran out with the crew on 6/12/10 for the Captains Platter contest, ended up with the biggest cooler by going well past most boats.

Water temps 54 at the entry out to 49 where we made our turn 10 miles out. Fishing wasn't fast and furious but it was steady. Found large schools of Herring out in the deeps and worked the outer edge picking up those solo marks that were working the schools. We had fish hit on just about everything with 21 lines out giving quit the presentation. If I had to give it to one or two lures it would have been a green dolphin on 3 colors on an offshore.

End of the day we ended with 11 lakers, 2 walleyes and a solo king, enough to win the Cpatain's Platter.

Congratulations on the win Tom. That's an awesome accomplishment! Look's like the new boat is paying off. Well done. BC

I got out on the big lake yesterday after running the gauntlet of debris around the Superior entry,,,did pick up one nice coho on top ,,,seems like the coho grew about 2 inches since catching them from shore earlier this spring

Good Job Tom on the captians platter

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
