Lake Superior Fishing Reports

Went 2 for 5 on Saturday. Motored right up to the "cheezy entry" and fished the mud. The water temps in the mud ranged from 41 to 43.5 degrees. As soon (and I mean as soon) as you left the mud it dropped to 39.

Most of my action was on spoons. The Blue/Yellow "oil slick" did really well as well as anything that I had that was blue/yellow; yellow/green; green/silver. I did pick up one fish on a blue/silver Hot-n-Tot. I was running 1oz snaps on my board lines and 3 colors of core. The core did better than the boards as it seemed to me that the fish were "short-hitting" the baits. I had lots of "bumps" on the core and the longline but nothing there; wait a couple of seconds and they hit it again. The boards would release on the bump. The 3-color was running about 15' down and the snaps were probably just above it.

The fish were 15-20 down over 20 to 50 FOW. They were right on top of the clouds of smelt.

Did I hear some one right, they picked up a brown? Was that on the MN side or further down the WI coast.

The brown came out in the clear water as I was making a round about in 50 FOW on the East side of the Dutchman.

I have caught 3 browns out there so far this year. All in the mud and smelt.

Hit the big lake for the first time this year on friday with 2 rookies. Just took a right from the lift bridge and trolled down the beach. Went 4 for 9 on cohos. Speed was 2.4-3 mph, temp senser down and out so I was fishing blind there, but 16-20' were the best. I pulled sticks, spoons but only caught 1 coho on a blue/silver cleo off a board. The hot rod was an orange dipsey set on 3 dropped until just out of sight with an orange dodger and a fly I call "Hanna Montana" (purple & blue with aqua beads and a red treble hook, named by my niece). That rig hit 3 of the coho and lost 2 more.

Tried a blue/aqua fly and had 2 come unbuttoned on that rig too, silver dodge for that one.

Sticks didn't work today, had 2 on, but nothing to net.

As for the rod, I managed to "catch" a daiwa rod and Okuma Magda reel. If anybody can name the bait and line type that were on the rig I will return it.

I did take the reel apart and greased it up, so it's in good shape.

Oh and I put that rod down and caught one of the coho on the "free" rod.

When I made a statement about having a boat parade form one entry to the other all I remember seeing was a comment about it being a big lake.

My guess is the lake didn't shrink while I was at the cabin for three days!! I for one have no idea on what the edicate should be on the big lake as I may only make it out there once or twice a season.

What are a couple of good tips for others such as myself. I'm not looking for a book worth of comments. Just a couple of good tips. What is the biggest problem most of you come across other then not having the lake to yorself.

Here are a couple things I saw.

1. Try to avoid fishing a pattern that is 90 degrees opposite the other boats. It makes a big mess trying to avoid the one boat out of sync and it pushes everybody towards each other. Most boats with planer lines out are over 200 feet wide and can’t turn fast.

2. If you see somebody with a fighting a fish, give them room to make boat corrections. Granted it is not hard to bring a coho up the shoot, but a bigger fish is a different story. Last weekend if people saw a fish on they came towards you. A swinging net is not a signal to come towards them.

3. It is not a war. If somebody pushes you off your line for reason just make a correction and keep fishing. Some people think it’s a game to push the other onto the beach.

4. DONT RUN BOARDS ACROSS THE HARBOR. There were 2 boats side by side last Sunday blocking the Superior entry with boards out. If you do run down the harbor with boards, please don’t give dirty looks as boats are cruising past your gear.

yes stay away from the mouth of harbor, or choose to fish in another mans wake!!

The fish moved a long way from where they were last weekend. Nothing near the Superior entry, we trolled about 9 miles up the shore before we found the coho's. We ended the trip with 6 all off the board lines. Color didn't matter but the port side of the boat caught most of the fish, which ever way we were headed. The boats were nice and spread out this weekend. Water temps from 36.1 to 43.4. Fished for about 6 hours but caught all the fish with in an hour once we found them.

yeah i didnt find anything by the superior entry either the water was very clear compared to thursday. There was mud all the way out to 65 feet and today there was none, but i found some just past dutchmans. Point--- do you mean 9 miles down the wisconsin shoreline, or up the n shore?

From what I have been hearing there just isnt 1 pod of fish out there . Of course.

Oh i know that. There was a little school of em just past dutch today, i got into em and another boat next to me picked off a few too. They would only hit the shiny silver sticks this morning at least the only thing i could get em on.

I was up that way. I read my post again and see that I didn't say which shore I went up. The coho I found sure were in a tight pocket, once you were out the fish were gone. I was in deeper water than I normally would be this time of year. I was never under 40 f.o.w.

How many did you get? You must have been in the real dark mud.

yeah was in the real muddy water. four. there was quite a bit of garbage floating around too.

Does anyone here use sticks or cranks for lakers on the Big Pond well into summer or is it just spoon and meat time and just spring is for the sticks?

I use just spoons and some meat behind dipseys and riggers in July and August but I stole some bigger sized original rapalas that just need new hooks and I would like to give them a shot behind a ball or dipsey on L Superior

I like bomber long A's and Brads stick baits behind the balls on the riggers. Also gets me lots a walleyes too.

Wow another nice day spent on the big lake ,,,,decent temps,, mild winds and the fish cooperated went 5 for 8 today all in shallow and muddy and silver picked up the most fish for me today JimA fished with me and he might have to head back out tomorrow with the current forecast

I catch them darn thing with sticks all the time when I swing towards deeper water making turns with my planer boards ,,,so they will hit sticks ,,,like NL I use bombers and Brads stick baits

so whats the deal with fishin big lake so far as "seasons" go? i have been told by a 'Sconi that ya can fish walleye and pike year round on Superior, that true? if so is there a designated area or line that a fella must be beyond? and lastly.... if so where is it?

Any good GPS will have the state borders marked,,, the line is only for state lic and limit ,,,but walleye and pike are open year round on both the mn and wi waters

Watch the weather and winds and pick your days accordingly,,, nothing will replace time on the water out there,,, but get as much info at the launchs as you can and check out others rigs there too

As long as your past the river mouths you can fish for walleye/pike in superior.

I just checked the MN regs and walleye season on Lake Superior and its tributaries is May 15 2010 to March 1 2011 with a 2 fish possession limit and 15" minimum size.

2thepointsetters are you sure? The rules you mention have always applied to the St. Louis river. From what I've understood Lake Superior is open year round, not sure on the length/possesion limits.

Looks like you are right, just read the regs. Maybe it's in Wisconsin water... I'll have to check that out later.

Im pretty sure its just the cheesey side of the pond thats open year round for walleye and pike.

WI Walleye are continuous on Superior. 5 fish limit, must be 15"+ with only one over 20". Northern are also continuous. 2 fish limit, must be 26"+.
