Lake Superior Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

So Chrome is where you got them and on what a secret. After all today was the last day of lakers on the pond.

It was...Ive learned in the past to keep my mouth shut about locations.

140-200 feet of water right on the bottom. 57 chev. glow and yellow glow with a one lb ball took fish. The further up the shore we went the better the fishing was.

I didn't make it out tonight. Unfortunately I got unexpectedly detained at work until just after 4pm so it didn't pay by time I got home from work to run down. frown I might still try Sat or Sun though for a few salmon if the weather holds.

Ya 140'-200'? With a 1# ball on bottom? Must have had a BIG reel there chrome. I take it no down riggers? You dont have to worry about anyone finding your spot I guess. crazy

yea, I pretty much only fished superior this summer. Its crazy how much I was able to learn when I was on superior multiple times a week, that is when I had a boat.

I still have not managed to put a fish in the boat on a flasher though. Im not sure why.

If I had to guess I would say your not running the flashers deep enough. I read one of your posts saying you were fishing a 1# ball on the bottom in 160 to 200 f.o.w. If you are running the 1 pound ball straight off the rod while trolling you were probably 80 feet down at the most depending on how you rigged it. The lakers in your pics look like they would have came from a shallow/upper part of the water column. Other important things to check are your speed and leader length from the fly to flasher.

those 5 fish were caught on the downrigger, in about 120-160 feet of water two weeks ago.I didn't take pictures of the deeper fish.

Ive given the flasher multiple chances, always on the downrigger i think im just going to stick with spoons for now.

If it's putting fish in the boat, keep doing it.

I just do the spoon thing now, also. To me, it's just easier to use and the less tackle on my line, the better

I tel ya what the last month of the season I catch my biggest lakers on a flasher/fly/smelt combo. Like 2dapoint said Im guessing your running too fast, leader is too long, your fishing it to high or something. 1.8 mph is where I start at for speeed and slow down and speed up every so often. Leader is 2.5 times the length of flasher. At least thats what I do.

Colors that have been good are green n glow, green n silver and green n white. Also a hammered silver has really beeen good as well. Fly color is usually something with green n blues in it with maybe some glow or silver for flash.

I have also been making my own spin n glow rogs and they have produced fish. I get the biggest ones I can find and tie them up just like a fly. Funny thing is my best color on the spin n glow has been either orange/chart or lime glow green n white. I also tend to use much bigger trebles than most people but to each his own. It work for me and when it stops I may down size the back treble.

Meat rigs and spin n glows are very easy to make and WAY cheaper that way than buying in a store. Give it a shot. If you can tie walleye spinner rigs you can make these.

Well until next laker season stay warm.

Tried the SS and didnt catch a thing. Saw fish but no takers. Moved into the river and got on some small eyes and rockies. Something to bend the rod anyways.

Hit the big pond today. Beautiful warm weather and calm. Best of all, I only saw one other boat all day! Fishing was slow. One hawg eye and two eater coho's. Muddy water out until about 55'. 52 - 56 degree surface temp.

Hey guys, was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on lures to use on the river? (st. louis) I have been fishing it for a while now and I haven't had a whole lot of luck.

Catchsomefish, this is actually the lake superior thread. The Duluth/BWCA thread is one down. There is also a St. Louis river thread in the Duluth section. It is only a few threads down from this one as of right now. I recommend reading through that one for some tips. To answer your question though, I prefer to use a simple jig and minnow most of the time. Cranks and crawler harnesses will do the trick as well. Just like any other body of water you just have to put in the time and find out what they want and where they are. Are you one of the few that still have not winterized the boat yet? Are you still getting out on the river?

If you respond maybe you want to do it in one of the threads I mentioned above just to keep things organized. Good luck out there and let us know how you do.

Saw some boat out on the big lake around the 30th-32nd avenue east heading back toward downtown yesterday around 3:30-4:00ish getting off the freeway on way home from work. Whoever you were, I tip my hat. You sir, are dedicated.

Any body fishing the river mouths? Thinking of a winter trip, but would like to try ice fishing the big lake. Any ideas on what would work the best for loopers or lakers?

No ice by the river mouths except on the rocks. Might not get any ice for fishing the big pond this year. If you come up you can always fish the St. Louis River and go after walleye and pout.

Any chance of shore fishing the mouths for loopers or lakers? Is there ice in the harbor from park point? Would like to get a couple trout thru the ice. Maybe even bring my 9yr old son, he has never caught a trout before. He caught his first bass 2 yrs ago on a weekend visit with me. This past year we only got to fish 3 times together. hoping for more fishing trips this year.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
