It was slush city out to my fish house today. Hit 4 deep slush spots on the way out...with about 2" to 3" of water around my house after I drilled holes. There are some horrible ruts out there, be careful. On a good note...the access is really good.

Ended up with a few eyes kept one 17" caught right before 7:00 pm - still hitting the shiners on set lines 18' - 20' fow.

We get another big snow and it will shutdown alot of lakes. Pelican is getting slush pockets and drifts. Trucks still gettin around. Only good thing is cold might freeze it up over the weekend.

The bite has shut off the last 2 nights. Only one small walleye today. Anybody else having any luck out there?

Slush spots seem to be freezing good but it is rough out there in the ruts.

Is the only access on the west side of the lake, off 371? I will be on the south east side of Round and was wondering if there was another option since the lakes are across ojibwa road from each other? Thanks

If your on round off the Ojibwa road access and want to access North Long just drive out of the parking lot across the road and on to North Long. Its just a small drive to to the lake.

So you are saying there is an access to N.Long Across from the Round Lake Access? Sorry I'm Kinda confused.

Thanks for the help.

So will this give me access to the main part of the lake, without going thur the channel?

No... this will put you on the north central portion of 371 bay....

i'm pretty sure you can get on the main lake if you take the road that goes behind the BP gas station by the race track

it goes right down the lake on the east side of the points

Yes you can drive on that road by BIR, It is a public acess, not much good in the summer as the waters about 4" deep, but great winter acess to middle lake

2-5 a night with 2 guys on N. Long Main lake. Usually gettin 2 or 3 and 5 on a good night. Consistent, but slow. Half hour window of good bite and that IS it for us anyway. We only fish 4-5:30pm, so I can't say anything about morning or daytime bite. Wish I had time. good luck

When we got that really warm weather we started to get the panfish itch and tried the 371 bay for gills and crappies. No crappies, but some nice gills. We drilled and drilled and drilled and once we found them, they were thick and then it was all about presentation. 14-16 fow was the key. So much fun going from walleyes to panfish. Just much more action all together. That main lake is calling my name though for one or two last walleye hurrahs. When the houses start to disappear, there is something that makes you think there might be a pile of fish out there just waiting for you when nobody else is around. Good Luck Fishing Fellas

hows it been lately? planning on one last fling this weekend for eye's. Looking at going out to merrifield bay. what depths should I be looking for? Stick around the humps, 20 fow?

probably try minnows and lindy rattling flyers and a deadstick on red hook. any other suggestions?

hoping ice should be good still to drive onto.

Any reports for Northlong? I have been out a few times in Merrifield Bay & marking fish in shallow but not much for size to them. I have been catching more pike than anything...had a big one on but lost it.

Also glad to see they put 2 docks in at the landing!

Good Luck

Fished Sat and Sunday, 6 eyes that we kept for 3 guys, half a dozen smaller 11"-14" that went back. on Sat northland thumper jig with a shiner was what they wanted. Found them in the weeds. Sunday was a different deal, 20'of water, rigging with a crawler blown up. no blades or beads or you will be retying because those slimmers will be all over ya. I was on the main lake both days, I think the wind really helped smile on Sat. kept them feeding in the weeds.city

Interesting that they would hit a thumper jig that has a blade on it one day & the next day no blade just a hook.

Thanks for the update!

I think any jig would have worked on Sat. in the weeds. The deal was to get it to the bottom with a shiner.city

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
