North Lida Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

I am planning on going out Sat. The next 3 weeks have been really good to us in the past. It has been extremely hit or miss though up until this point, but with a more stable weather pattern hopefully that will change.

Roads were good when we were out there. FYI: don't leave them! I saw way too many people get stuck while I was out there. If you're parking off the road in a 4-wheel drive truck, fine. Otherwise, take your ATV or snowmobile and don't risk it.

Lots of water coming up, too, but still drivable.

So if someone wants to get to Clay point is that still do able without having to drive through a whole bunch of Slush? And once out there with a portable is the water coming out the Holes?

Well we went out this weekend and pulled some nice big fat crappies out of Lida. I caught one 13" the rest were in the 12-12.5" range. Once again, not fast and furious on the bite, but if you stayed after them they would come through every 20 minutes or so. I caught mine jigging, everyone else in the group caught them on a set line.

Nice to hear someone is hitting them. My son and I were out on Lida two weekends ago with the 4 wheeler so we could hit my normal spots away from the crowd and came up short. We tried every depth from 10'-28'. That lake still throws me for a loop now and then.

We were fishing in 30-33 fow. The spot we go to is near everyone else out there, but we have found a small inside corner with shallower water all around.

Take the access off of county 4 on the north end of the lake (only public access on N Lida). The roads were perfectly fine this weekend and we drove all over without any trouble as long as you had 4 wheel drive and good tires. Good luck. I caught my crappies jigging a forage minnow tipped with a minnow head.

Was out yesterday, didn't find any crappies but got into some nice sunfish in about 13 fow. The access was in rough shape... I would guess we were driving in about 8-10 inches of water/slush until we could get off the main "road" then everything hardened up and you could go just about anywhere..... Something about driving on water just doesn't sit very good in my stomach.

has driving out there changed at all? Thinking about heading out today but not sure what all this rain has been doing to the ice.....

This rain is a mixed blessing, getting the itch for open water, but really, I don't want the ice to go out. I need to find me a couple more hot spots before the ice is gone.

With all the rain, I am wondering if I will even be bringing my 4 wheeler this weekend or getting some exercise and walking out. Either way, I am hoping the bite has picked up with all the water going through the cracks and holes.

3 of us fished North Lida today. The bite was pretty good, in fact it was maybe too good. We drilled out an area to fish and then trucks, 4 wheelers, and groups of guys kept stopping and fishing right next to us. I understand that when you struggle to find fish or don't know where to go you tend to head towards an area that someone is fishing. What got me was the stupidity of some of the ice fishing etiquette that seems to have disappeared.

A wheeler pulling 2 sleds drives right through the area we are fishing. We are hole hopping and have items scattered all over the place. I am surpised he didn't run over anything. Nothing beter then an old noisy wheeler spooking fish in 11 feet of water.

The best was when one guy shows up, asks me what the limit is on crappies, then pulls out his fishing rod and proceeds to fish out of one of the holes I drilled. I let it go. But then, he stands up and walks over to another one of my holes. I say to my friend, "I think he is going to fish another one of our holes". Sure enough, he sits down on his bucket and drops down his jig. The part I like best is the fact I have 5 fish laying on the ice within 2 feet of the hole! I walk over, place the fish in my bucket, and tell him in a nice way that what he is doing is not appreciated and that he is fishing in the holes we drilled and are still using. He comments, "I guess that is ice fishing!" I said a few more things, he got the hint, and finally left.

I had 2 more groups come through later and do pretty much the same thing. The area we drilled was maybe 40 feet by 30 feet so it wasn't like we were spread all over the place for 3 guys and people couldn't tell we were fishing there. We only stayed at a hole about 5-7 minutes before rotating.

We eventaully packed it in because we got so tired of the fish vultures circling us.

I am off base in wondering what has happened to common decency?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
