Fishing has been slow. 9"-12" of ice, maybe more now. Vehicles driving out (not me!). Roads plowed to the popular spots. Only a few slushy areas, not bad at all compared to metro lakes. Struggled with the 3-wheeler cross-country last weekend with all the snow so hopped on the snowmobile. Used to not have one, sure is the ticket with the conditions now, exactly why I got it. Good luck.

I was out last Sun. and got skunked in 2 different spots. Only marked 4 fish in 2 hrs. I did fish away from every one else though, I'm not a fish in the crowd type of guy.

Well, the fish are down there but just not biting. It's a really light bite, had several take the bait breifly only to let go. Fished 4 hours Sat. and 2 hours Sun. with only one fish up through the hole. Ice is 16" thick now with a couple inch layer of slush.

Moved my shack to a different spot and finally caught a few decent fish (released). Will be trying my luck at the KLSC contest on Knife next Sat.

  • 1 month later...

Finally got out there for the first time in a while, Arrived on the ice and got set up around 9am and fished until noon. Caught 5 crappies and one sunfish. Drilled a good 25 holes and had to bounce around to try to stay on top of any fish. Helped push a Truck out that was stuck, I wouldnt really recommend driving off the beaten path too much unless you got 4x4 and the frame of your vehicle isnt too low, there are some deep pockets of snow. Anyways a guy stopped by and told us about the ice fishing contest that was yesterday the 27th, He said that only 1 fish (a perch) was a caught by anybody the entire time, Can anybody confirm or deny that claim? Here is a pic from today....

holehopper: Was at the cabin on Sunday. Main lake is still locked up tight. Its open in front of the pier and under the bridge to the dam. A few people by the cty 19 bridge and on the pier, one boat in the small open water area. Ice is awfully black toward the east end. I would think it should go this week with the upper 60's and south winds. Hoping to drop the dock and lift in on April 10th, so it better get out of my way......LOL grin

Man, you guys sure are pumped up for open water season! I'm really in no hurry, early ice-out this year so plenty of time. I'll be there Friday and Saturday, will post ice conditions or lack there of on Monday.

I'm going up on Saturday morning and hook up the water. If the window fan idea works, I'll be ice free, not sure about your side Dave.....LOL

craigums: I'm headed up Sat morning to put in the dock/lift. Will also put the boat on the lift as well. Hopefully by midmorning things will slow down enough so that the landings are a little quiet. I use the one on #65 by Bowes landing. Looks like a nice weekend. I'm headed up alone but might just have to stay over and do some scouting..... crazy

I'll be up Friday night spending the weekend at the cabin. Just installed my marcum on my tin can boat and I wanted to test it out. However I know how crazy that lake can get in the spring time. If its too busy I've got a couple backup lakes I could hit

I you get there around 7:00 am its not bad at all. Most people start arriving later in the morning.

Sportsmans at 6 and launch at 7. An excellent way to start the day.

It was a different story at 3:30 PM Sat., the landing was packed!

I estimated about 40 rigs parked there, looked like it was opener.

Knife sure gets a lot of pressure. I got out Sun. and wet a line,

what a beautiful day on the lake!

Ron, have you heard wether or not the #65 access will remain open after July 4th? They are closing #65 from Mora to Woodland for resurfacing and will only allow local traffic. North bound will reroute on #6 past the high school to Hwy 47 and then north to #27 and then east again to #65. I'm sure a few business's ie: Bowes landing and Crows Nest aren't overly excited about this. Bait shop people in Mora (next to Sportsmans Cafe) said it won't be done until fall. They did want to give everyone the fishing opener, Memorial Day and 4th of July before they shut it down...... frown

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
