I drove around the se side of the lake today and it is all good. Most of the snow melted and all of the slush is frozen. Good luck to ya! i found anywhere from 12 to 16 inches of ice.

I was told a road could be in the works to access the east side of the lake.

Never fished clearwater in the winter...where is BJ's bait? Is it near that bar that's across the road from the public access?

a little farther east, next to what is or used to be the waterfront bar and grill. there is also a rv resort there as well.

Hey thanks for the info Secret, I work nights, and won't have a chance to get out there until Sunday night or Monday night. If it's pretty good, I'll let ya know. I can e-mail you some info. You use a GPS? Some of my spots can be found w/out a GPS but easier with one.

The lake only frooze over a month ago and it was very windy right before it frooze over, i think that might have something to do with the water clarity.

i was suprise on how dirty the water was out here this year. usally its clear

I drove from bj's landing all the way to the east end by (hwy 24) and found no slush. every place I drilled had about 16" to 18" of ice. bj's has a nice road plowed down through the narrows and into the east end. if you go beyond the plowed road on the east end you will need a fourwheel drive the snow is a little deep down there but no slush.

I was out on Clearwater this afternoon and the driving is pretty good all over. There are lots of roads plowed but be careful around the points and the narrows.

I did pick up one nice walleye and tossed back a couple of little ones. It was a little slow, but the sunshine made up for the shy fish.

We have been doing preaty well out there for the walleyes, however be careful around points and weed lines. Put my sled in the drink on friday night off of bungalow island. The ice went front 15 inches to 2 inches in a matter of a few yards.

My neighbor dropped the front end of his truck in last night on the East Side, only about 20 yds off the road that BJ's plowed!!

must've been kinda close to the narrows area. I heard that that road goes over a strip of land just south of the narrows.

a friend thats been out there alot told me that BJ's plowed a road from the west, down to the narrows, over a strip of land and into the east. The road goes all the way down to the southeast end of the lake I guess. I get on the the SE part somewhere else, but he said there are roads all over the SE part. I don't know first hand. Yet.

Welcome efish. I get 'em at prime time (4-7 pm) and thats it. Of course, I stop tryin after that. I do pretty well with red glow spoons. If they are pretty active I like the jigging Rapala's. They work good. I usualy hit the slab's after 8 pm. Shallow transitions (sand to gravel or rocks) and near any green weeds you are able to find under the ice (not too likely not though).

I haven't hit that lake this year though, and It is true what they say: What works 1 day might not work the next. Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

did alright this weekend for walleyes, got the wife her first of the year and my god daughter her first of the year both 20" managed to get a few more eaters also, We moved back up to 20ft of water, I was at 30 and not getting much action.

They were on the west side. I think by a crappie hole near the accesss. He went last night and looked on the lake for it but did not see it.

Kid can really help your fishing. Give each a rod, littler kids get a older pole no reels. I teel them if your bobber start to go down pull & run. just keep an eye on them you'll Laugh Your But Off. as fish launch from the hole. Older ones that can handle a reel get those. then put down a tip-up for each kid on the ice.

Oh how well I remember those days, fishing in 30+ feet with small kids, I was so happy when they came out with reels. But your advice is right on, set the hook and run, another great moment taking my kids fishing.

      I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

      Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
