Scoot...were you using Rod's boat?

Posted

Scoot,
Sorry to hear about the incident with the rock. Are you sure it wasn't a turtle. I like to think that I am a good map reader so the rocks I do hit must just be huge turtles migrating through the area.
Hope your next trip goes better.

Bummer Scott....At least you got the 'skis you were after!

warrior,
Thank God no!!! I was using out 17' Alumacraft. Had I cracked up my dad's boat, I wouldn't have dared come home! He actually decided not to come over there because the water was pretty low and he didn't want to hit anything.
The weekend wasn't really as bad as I made it sound. It was a serious bummer dinging up the 115 Yammy though. Oh-well, I guess that's why we pay for insurance, eh?
Scoot

I hit a rock! First time for this for me. I'm afraid I'm one of the many, many people on LOW this year who have cracked a rock. I was fishing out of Morson and have a top of the line set of maps for the area. I also had a very good map reader who was in charge of navigating with me. However, we both had a mental lapse for about 10 seconds and "WHAM"! My buddy was having a hard time reading the maps because the water was crashing over the boat and making the maps tough to read. I cracked the lower housing above the skag, broke off the skag, probably screwed the gear case (lower), and maybe bent the shaft. Yuck!
Fishing was tough- we fought the wind and waves on Fri and Sat and managed a few walleyes, very few smallies, and three sklunges. Three lunges on Sat for two boats was a good deal, but that was about it.
Then, of course, when we had to head out on Sun, the freakin' weather was beautiful. Figures.
Scoot

Hey Scoot,
Bummer about tagging the rock. Don't feel like the Lone Ranger though. I know of 8 lower units gone up in the Angle, including some locals who drive the lake every day. It's a bad year for 'new rocks.' I did a lot of looking around this past weekend, and had a couple "I've been driving over THAT all this time?!" moments. Even found a couple things that aren't on the map.
A friend of mine up there has a saying: "There are two kinds of people on LoTWs - the people who have hit rocks, and the people who are going to." You just moved from one camp to the other is all wink.gif
Hope you get the Yammy fixed and back on the wayer quick.
Cheers,
RK
RK:
This is Daver.
Pretty cool looking out there this year huh?
I've spotted a few rocks this year that have always sort of haunted me over the years, I've just given them lots of room, now I've got a real good bead on them.
You know that big rock flat on the south side of Royal? I was fishing there the other day with the electric, and I just finished saying to my partner, I bet you could hit this bugger this year... two seconds later my big motor bumped ground...Careful going by there... that one will get somebody this year.
It is so fun to look down at certain spots this year, take lots of notes, you probably won't get this good of look again in your lifetime.
Take care,
Scoot, sorry about the lower unit... I was put in your camp years, and years ago.. several times. I'm hoping my rock hitting days are behind me. You are right though all it take is a 5 second mind lapse, and wham... I've hit a few I knew full well were there, just wasn't thinking for a second pulling out of a spot...

Hey Widetrack -
Yeah, really is wild seeing all the stuff that's out there. I bumped a rock this past weekend too. One of those "supposed to be a rock here somewh-WHUMP. Oh, there it is..." deals. Realized there are some spots that I haven't been respecting nearly enough in terms of the size and location of the rocks. Come in hot or leave hot on a spot, and no idea how I've gotten away with it so far... Gonna wear out my waypoint button pretty soon. wink.gif
Also had a few 'so this is why this spot is so good' revelations. Not bad now because the water's clear, but when it greens up it's gonna be freaking spooky.
You going up this weekend or over the 4th? I'm heading up this Friday, staying all week and going home on the 6th. If you're headed up, drop me an email and we'll drink a beer or something.
RK

Rob,
I won't be up this coming weekend, but pretty sure I'll be around at least some over the 4th. There is always a cold one in the fridge, stop in if you see the lights on.
Dave.

Hey Widetrack -
Sounds good. May see you up there. Will be running around in the Tuffy-mobile as usual. Finally bought a kicker though. Already used it to get out of a couple things I shouldn't have gotten into. wink.gif
RK

Scoot,
My buddy and I joined the growing"rock club" as well up at the Angle 2 weeks ago. Now I know why they put that skag on the bottom. Brand new Honda 50 4. Cracked about an inch off the bottom of the skag but that was it. That has to be the worst feeling in the world. Wham! and then raising the motor not knowing what to expect. Fishing up there was real good though.
Good Luck,
Tully

RK,
How'd it go for you last weekend? Find any sklunges?
Scoot

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter. Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th. I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th. Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt. Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
