I'm headed up from the cities to Sabaskong Bay on Thursday for the first time. I'm taking my 11 year old son up there for his birthday. Looking mostly for eyes, but might spend some time on northern, muskie and smallies.
Any reports or advice would be appreciated!!

I just got off the phone with the resort we will be staying at and they told me the water level is very low and they are already starting an algae bloom.

Fish Head,
I don't know where in Sabaskong you'll be staying but the fishing has been excellent. We fished Miles Bay last weekend and picked up some nice fish. I talked with a neighbor who went west to Dawson and caught eyes steady in 18-20 feet of water off the points. I would work 18-26' around points and reefs near gravel, sand, boulder bays.
Yes the water is low. I would advise picking up a Canadian Coast Guard Map on your way up. As far as I can tell the water level is about two feet lower than what is posted on the maps.
Good luck, hope it's a great experience for you and your son. It's great to see the next generation being introduced to the area. I guarantee you will enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the info Marknamy. We will be staying right by Blueberry Island. in the middle/eastern side of the bay. By looking at the map I think Miles Bay might be too far to travel considering all the island and rock piles. I'm not sure I could find my way there or back......I've got to get GPS!!.
I'll try the edges, points and rock piles in Sasaskong Bay and hopefully I can turn my son into a walleye lover.
What have they been hitting on.....crawlers, leeches or minnows?
Thanks a million for the help!

Miles Bay may be too far but I would definitely get out for a cruise at least once. The beauty is breathtaking. Just watch the map and compass. No need for a GPS but I don't go on the water without mine.
We caught fish on everything we threw at them. Mainly pulling spinners (hammered gold) with crawlers, leaches, and minnows. The live crawlers worked the best but we picked up some nice fish with fake leeches and fake minnows.
Good luck. Let me know if you need any more advise. I'll try to answer any and all questions.

There’s critters out and about. Get yourself some cellular trail cams and you’ll see.

It wouldn't be the first time I've heard the USS Skunked Again breaking ice! I left this morning, the rain really did a number to the ice. I'll bet the Partridge River will be open by the weekend.

My yard is pretty open, but narrow. I think I'll be fine with reception in the areas I'm thinking. I try to keep the hill somewhat natural, but my wife wants to see the lake better. The video's I've watched, they have topped the trees and mounted the dish. I would this the swaying would affect the signal. Does Starlink help you with using WiFi for calling? My T-Mobile service sux at the cabin. Did you bury your cable?

I'm on the wide part of the channel going in to Black Bay. We won't see Paul B. For years.

Welcome back. Wow it's been since 2018 it looks like. Did you ever "I'm tightening up my footprint and want to build on my Bozeman lot on the Gallatin"? 😏

You're probably right. This isn't official since I've already lost, but I'll make my supplemental guess for May 6th since it's still open. 😄 As long as I can snake my way along the shore and/or plow through some dark ice on the 8th, I'll be happy. I love aluminum boats!

For all of my "problems" with getting a clear signal it's worth it. I can spend more time at the lake because I can work during the day and play or get things done at night. Toss in that I can record and watch a football/hockey/basketball game when I'm done at the end of the day....priceless. Like your place, our property is more natural and I was worried about having to cut down a bunch of trees. I like that people have to get up close to see our place from the lake through the trees. Luckily I didn't have to do much to get enough a signal that works for me. If I needed to be on video calls, I probably would run the dish down to the shore to get a better view of the sky. BTW - the main problem with mounting the dish on a tree is that the tree still has a canopy that will block the signal. The best option would be to top a tree and then mount it on the clear-cut top.
