Brewster needs to be fired!

I realize I will hear they won it but it was pitiful. 17 penalties. At least the Brewster crew holds one record.

Why would a stud FB player come to Mn ?

I would consider most 2 star recruits from texas better than most 4 star recruits from minnesota.

Anyway, after watching the game, my conclusion is...I have never been so disgusted in a winning effort in my whole life! sick How the heck did michigan state manage to lose this game? 17 penalties for over 150 yards?!?!?! Are you kidding me? It's not like this is new either, the gophers (especially on offense) are giving up penalties left and right. Players need to be benched! Of course brewster would never do anything like that, after all...he's so proud of how the team played crazy

Now we're in a 3 way tie for the bottom of the barrel of bowl eligibility with northwestern and michigan sporting 5-4 records as well. Who wants the motor city bowl the most?

Brewster can recruit, that's why I say give him another year or two. Here's one of those Texas 4 Star recruits committing yesterday!! And a possible 4 star WR as well!

By the way, Weber played alot better this week. He was just staring down Decker too much. He has to spread the ball around now, and that should help his development.

Brewster picks up a four-star RB

By Marcus Fuller on October 31, 2009 3:03 PM

One key area in which the Gophers need to upgrade their talent level is running back. They added a possible future starter today in four-star senior Josh Huff of Aldine Nimitz High School (Texas), according to GopherIllustrated.com.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound Huff had been orally committed to Utah until last week. He made the switch after making an official visit to Minnesota this season.

Gophers coach Tim Brewster could return his entire backfield next season with sophomores Duane Bennett and DeLeon Eskridge and redshirt freshman Kevin Whaley. He has three backs committed in the 2010 class with Woodbury's LaMonte Edwards, Florida's Donnell Kirkwood and Huff, who has 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash.

The 6-2, 220-pound Edwards, also a four-star prospect by Rivals.com, could move to linebacker, but he was told by Minnesota he could compete for playing time at running back.

-- Scout.com reported Friday that four-star Florida wide receiver James Louis would be visiting the Gophers today. Louis is currently committed to Ohio State, but he is Kirkwood's high school teammate at Delray Beach Florida Atlantic.

Nice to have the skill players but it all starts with the off. line. So far I have not heard of any top lineman coming here. The line we have now is c- at best. Can't block can't run or throw.

We heard the same fluff last year about these supposed all-American recruits signed to come here. The problem is they have to go to school and be academically eligible to play. Oops, Brewster must have forgotten to tell them that on his recruiting visit.

I went to my first game in the new stadium and it turned out to be awesome. That's what college football is all about.

I think Weber was better because Decker was out and he had to look at other reads and the fact that everyone was calling for Gray to start. I loved the "These Refs Suck" chant and corresponding boos for the whole MSU drive. They seemed to call makeup calls in the 4th quarter.

Way to go Maturi for the stadium. Hope it helps recruiting. If they ever field a great Big 10 team, it will be one of the hardest tickets in town. Just one Rose Bowl in my lifetime would be nice.

He definitely needs to grow as a coach, but the recruiting is waaaaaay better than when Mason was here. Remember his big recruits are coming next year, are Freshman or Sophmores.

I agree that some of those players should be riding the pine until they can prove they belong on the field. I was also at the game and the fans were really letting some of those players (and refs) have it after some of those bonehead mistakes.

I gotta say that I really didn't expect Weber to throw for 416 yards last night, especially in that weather. Maybe the Decker injury is going to be a blessing.

They still can play themselves into a bowl game this year. Illinois just destroyed Michigan which is a shocker, but the next two games are at home so they should win both. At Iowa to wrap things up.

If yesterday's gophers play yesterday's illinois next week, then the gophers may be in big trouble. The good news for the gophers is I'll probably be at the game, and they are 2-0 while I'm in attendance this year, so they got that going for them smile

Dump this coach and do it now.

Everyone wants to string this out, but in a few years the program won't be any better than it is now with this coach and his slick willy dog and pony show. The players aren't buying it anymore either. When you've lost the players you're just rearranging chairs on a sinking ship and that's what he's doing. The sales job can only last so long before you need to start showing results, but he has not shown anything to this point that indicates the program is going in the right direction.

I guess if you love the mediocrity, beating bottom dwelling teams like Indiana, Purdue, Northwestern, and Illinios year after year, then by all means lock him up for a life contract because that's all you're going to get out of this guy. For some reason people here like mediocrity, so it doesn't surprise me to hear support for "Brew". Sad is what it is.

As a 2001 Purdue graduate you may want to revist your statement about beating us year after year. You may want to look at the last 12 years or so and the outcomes of those games.

Granted we suck now.

I don't have faith in Brewster. Purdue had a 12 year consecutine losing streak from 1984 to 1996, then a coach by the name of Joe Tiller showed up and we proceeded to play in 10 bowl games in the 12 years he coached there.

New coach and find a few diamonds in the rough like we did, Drew Brees, born in Austin, undefeated as H.S. QB and was passed up by all the Texas schools, and you may find yourself competing.

When it happens get ready to enjoy the ride, it was a blast being on campus from 96-01.

I never like seeing purdue on our schedule. I think we've beaten them the last 2 times, but before that they beat us like 10 years in a row. Even the year mason got us an 8-3 record, we lost to purdue like 55 to 45 frown I'll be cheering for purdue next week against michigan.

Like the one Freshman arrested last night?

I don't think a freshman with an alcohol-related offense comes as a surprise to anyone, nor should it be representative of the coach. But if you think it is, then here's a few of my favorites from back when a "quality" coach was in charge: laugh

The University of Wisconsin suspended 26 football players -- nearly a quarter of the team -- for one to three games on Thursday for accepting hundreds of dollars in discounts in violation of NCAA rules. blush

Former Wisconsin running back P.J. Hill has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and leading police on a chase. Police gave chase until the car crashed into a retaining wall. Hill was arrested at gunpoint. blush

The University of Wisconsin football program suffered another ugly hit Wednesday when for the second time in less than a week tailback Booker Stanley was arrested of a violent incident for beating and choking a 20-year-old woman. Stanley's arrest came less than 12 hours before he was to appear in Dane County Circuit Court for a plea hearing related to his alleged involvement in a fight last April. Stanley faced four misdemeanor charges for that incident, two counts of battery, one count of disorderly conduct and one count of resisting arrest. blush

Tiller was a great coach. He just looked tough with that mustache! grin

Back on topic, one thing that concerns me is the lack of pass rush for the Gophers. It's time for someone step up, especially the DE's. Or Cosgrove needs to do more disguised blitzes with the LB's on obvious passing downs.

That's fantastic. Two days and two similar answers. "Hey, doesn't matter if it's wrong, they did it, so it's acceptable if we do it too!" smirk

No matter how badly you want to spin it, any time a student athlete winds up in trouble it's always a reflection of the athletic program and coach. There are definitely lack of discipline and personal accountability issues going on with the football program and all fingers point at Brewster.

Apparently he hasn't taught his players the art of the silver tongue and utilizing used car salesmen magic to get themselves out of trouble, otherwise that fabulous freshman recruit of his wouldn't have needed a tazer pointed at his chest to get him to submit to the police.

WOW...and to think the Gopher program is the only one in the nation having 18-19 year olds getting in a little trouble on a Friday or Saturday night. That's amazing news there LMITOUT!!! Get real.

You are an NDSU grad correct? I spent 5 years playing football there during the late 80's early 90's. Couple of National championships/great program etc. blah blah blah...and guess what...half the team smoked the hootch and a late night weekend "bail-out" was the norm...even expected. Please get off your high horse and go lay by your dish.

The public seems to ignore those things when you actually win something meaningful or are a successful program such as NDSU.

Have the Gophs done anything meaningful or successful in recent memory? Not so much.

Sounds like some NDSU players were limiting out last spring.

Garrett Johnson couldn’t help but get into a scuffle during the first practice for North Dakota State’s football team.

“I’m one of those guys who likes to mix it up a little bit,” Johnson said. “First day of practice, I want to show the incoming freshmen that I’m not scared. You’ve got to take them down a little bit.”

Johnson was sending a message last Wednesday – less than four hours after Bison head coach Craig Bohl delivered even stronger messages to Johnson, Jose Mohler and Shamen Washington.

All three Bison players were arrested last spring for driving under the influence. All three sat out of spring practices.

Bohl’s message last week: a one-game suspension for Washington and two-game suspensions for Johnson and Mohler.

“It was a huge mistake,” said Johnson, a backup defensive end who was arrested last March for DUI and minor in possession. “After going through all the police and school officials, it’s just not worth it. I have a full ride and they could throw everything out the window. It has been a real eye opener.”

The suspensions couldn’t have come at a worse time for Washington and Mohler.

Washington, after being awarded a medical hardship after last season’s knee injury, gets one more season to play. But he has to sit out the Sept. 3 opener against Iowa State.

Last April, Washington and Mohler were arrested for DUIs on the same night, about a half hour apart.

“I’m very sorry for what happened,” said Washington, a

23-year-old senior wide receiver and return specialist from St. Petersburg, Fla. “I apologized to the team, the coaches, my family and my friends. I’m just going to learn from it.”

Mohler entered last spring’s practices as the No. 2 quarterback. But he only got in two practices before the suspension and will miss the Iowa State and Sam Houston State games next month.

According to Bohl, he has a lot of work to do to make a bid for the starting spot.

“That really took me down a lot,” Mohler said of missing spring practices. “I messed up. I had to pay my dues.”

These three suspensions weren’t nearly as severe as the punishment handed to backup quarterback Troy Jackson and wide receiver Jordan Schultenhover.

Jackson was arrested for marijuana possession last February. Schultenhover was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver.

Both were dismissed from the team.

These arrests prompted NDSU officials to unveil – earlier than expected – a plan to curb campus alcohol and drug use. The $50,000-per-year plan includes a new online education course for all incoming freshmen to more dry, late-night campus events.

The plan also includes two new educational programs for athletes, starting this fall.

Bohl likes the proactive approach, strongly disagreeing with those who felt the suspensions for Johnson, Mohler and Washington should have been more severe.

“The easy thing to do, and I know everybody wants blood and meat, is to throw down a bunch of hard suspensions,” Bohl said. “If you talk to any person who is involved with students across campus, and around the nation, they’ll say that formula simply does not work.

“So all the people who are somewhat experts out there who think that’s how you handle youth, I think they need to wake up and smell the coffee. Quite frankly, all the research we’ve been given from people who have been trained in this area, they say that’s not what works.”

While given another chance, Johnson, Mohler and Washington say Bohl’s message to make smart decisions off the field is louder than ever.

Mohler, a 19-year-old sophomore from Cardiff, Calif., already has two minor in possession charges that he admits put Bohl in a tough situation.

“Everybody doesn’t take it lightly now,” Mohler said. “You look in the coach’s eyes and he has a deep look in his eyes … like he isn’t joking about things. It’s all business.”

Johnson, a 20-year-old sophomore from Chaska, Minn., said he doesn’t party anymore.

“I’m not even close to alcohol or anything,” Johnson said. “And if I see a player that’s doing it, I’m going to be there for him if he needs help. It’s not even a question for me right now. It’s not worth it.”

Every coach in the country (at every level) deals with these same things all the time. I'm sure all those who have experienced their own kids actions from the ages of 18-22 go through the same thing too. It's all part of growing up. grin

One and two game suspensions lol.

Just google any team then freshman arrested and you will find every team in the big ten has some. Big Ten leader Iowa has supposedly had 18 arrests the last two years. Coaches son was even arrested.

Back to the topic. I think Brewster needs to beat the Illini and make a game of it at Iowa. 0 for every trophy game and no big wins just doesn't cut it.

He is still playing with some of Mason's kids...I'd at least give him two years of his own seniors before you let him go. There is something to be said about stability in a program and letting his recruits grow up. We really don't know what all these recruits can do quite yet and it'll be a few years before we do.

Brewster should, however, be held responsible for bringing that stability to the program. Right now he's failing tremendously at this. STOP changing coordinators and offensive philosophies every year for starters.

He could not get his son to come here. And the one who did dumped the U after one year. I would give him two more years and if nothing changes show him the door. And then get a coach with a past winning history at a major school.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
