Brewster needs to be fired!

Lane and his dad are the new coaches at USC. Is Kiffin a joke or what? He knew he wasn't going to be able to back up all that smack he was talking and he knew he wouldn't be able to compete in the SEC so he bails to a weaker conference and tries to get some wins.

All football whether it be pro or college is out of control. Money seems to be the prevailing answer to all positions not performance. And that be for player or coach. Loyalty to Coach or Player is a thing of the past. Seems to me that is just like any employer is now to the employee. Doesn't seem that there is much for long term employment on either part. It's always greener on the other side of the fence.

  • 3 weeks later...

Any word on whether the extension has been finalized or not? The only gopher news I've been hearing the last few weeks are all the recruits we keep losing.

Looks like you can kiss your chances of any meaningful wins goodbye for another two years.

If there is a silver lining to this news it is that the extension was only for two years.

I wouldn't be surprised if the U put an "out" clause in it, since extensions are primarily done for recruiting with mediocre coaches. (such as Brewster)

Try four years. It was a two year extension to his existing contract which has two years left. They said he would be here through the 2013 season. mad

Whether Brewster can coach, recruit, do both or do neither is very debatable, even to serious Gopher fans. Next year should really tell us a lot about Brewster and his credibility. The gophers have a very tough schedule, but still, there's no more "Mason's recruits" and just his players.

It's gonna be a tough season to watch next year. Lane Kiffin is gonna bring USC here and run the score up bigtime! And since things will have already been going downhill before that game (loss to middle tennessee state), the rest of the season will be downright unwatchable frown

If six wins every year against bottom of the pack teams is stability, then Brewster is your man.....you got'em alright!

Over the last 50 years nobody else has proven they can do better over a sustained period of time with this program.

The one who FINALLY comes in here and get's it done will be on the next train out of town heading for bigger pastures as soon as possible.

Unless he finds an offense...next year will be his last anyway.

The only thing that will be different is we'll be playing in a brand new stadium that is half empty, instead of playing in the half empty dome frown

National Signing Day! I see the recruiting master has brought in approximately the 6th best class in the big ten. WOW! What a performance...

PUTZ!

Worst part is he can't coach as well as he recruits!!!

Get rid of Brew and the AD, now we will get bombed with how he worked his tail off trying to get Henderson unit opening kickoff.

Definitely not impressed with the recruiting class. There are some good players, but nothing that I can honestly say will improve the team all that much.

It's waaaaay to early to say that. I thought he did a good job bringing in some much needed o-line help.

Recruiting class rankings mean absolutely nothing of course.

This isn't pro sports and you can't fire coach's and AD's yearly because you the frustrated fan are unhappy with the program the kids are playing in.

News flash Lou Holtz isn't walking through the door anytime soon..so get use to a 6-5 team for years to come.

Wisconsin's class was rate pretty low also.

Yeah, I know my post didn't make a lot sense again so save the commentary until the we see how this class actual does....LOL... grin

Agreed PierBridge but Wisconsin is usually at the top of the conference and the Gophers languish in the bottom third. It's just not recruiting thats the problem its developing these players and thats where Brewster and his coaches have failed miserably. I realize we will probably never contend with the Ohio States' and Wisconsins' but it would be nice to get up among the top in the Big Ten but I don't think Brewster can give the U that.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
