Any reports out there? Like ice thickness? Has the slush froze yet? Heading up Saturday. Thanks for any input.

My kids and I were riding sleds on a nearby lake and ran into quite a bit of slush. It was -24 degrees during the night and we were out riding at -15 Saturday. The snow really works as a good insulator.

Thanks Grainbelt, I am planning coming over next weekend, just want to know if I should bring the ATV or the wheeler?

Either one will work fine. The snow is more fluffy, not crusted and is starting to settle a bit. With the cold this week the slush should firm up I hope. I would like to bring out the wheel house this coming weekend and not get stuck. Fishing was pretty slow for my family this last weekend.

Just got back from Miltona. We rode sleds out, but saw alot of trucks driving out. There was about 6" of snow on the lake. Where we fished there was 15" of solid ice. Only managed 1 walleye anda bunch of perch. I guess the fish didn't like the -20 degrees below zero.

Eye's were very aggressive yesterday. The bit started for me at 2pm and lasted till 6pm and then again at 9pm. 16 in all with one dink and the rest very respectable, 19 the biggest. Good day out on the ice.

Thanks for the report, now you've got my hopes up. What depth were you finding them at? If you want to keep it off the website you can email me at

I was on the west side that day, shoreline structure. I went on Monday just before the H pressure system came in (thats what helped me). After punching about 30 holes I narrowed in my search. I found a weedline ending at 10' with a immediate drop to 14'flat to sand with mini sand rollers (were they related). Then it drops to 32' after the sand flat. During the day I had my shack in 26' with tip ups in 18', then moved into 17' at 4pm (just below top/outside edge for the evening. Good luck

Three of us spent 8 hours on the lake Friday. Had about 20 decent sunfish and 1 crappie to show for it. Drilled over 100 holes in several different spots but found mostly perch. Ended up in a community location to scratch out the few fish we kept for dinner.

Day trips from the metro aren't very conducive to following what's working day to day. We were pretty disappointed, but we'll give it another try in a couple of weeks and hope for better action.

Any reports on the spearing lately??

Spearing is allowed on musky lakes? Im surprised no one in the area has commented on this like the Muskycrybaby. He is very sensitive even if you mishandle a catch and release 51 inch fish of a lifetime!

Saw a few, got a couple. Couldn't get them to come in the hole very easily though. You been out there?? Any reports??

I am thinking of shooting up to miltona next week. If my buddy with a bigger boat can't come I am thinking of bringing my 14ft with a 25 hp on it. My question is, does this lake generally get pretty rough compared to other lakes. For example I would not bring my boat to Mille Lacs .

If the wind comes up strong it gets rolling quicker than a lot of lakes in the area because there's a big shallow flat across basically the middle third of the lake North to South. As long as the forecast isn't for more than 15mph or so & you're careful you should be totally fine in that rig. It's not like Mille Lacs, you're rarely more than maybe 3/4's of a mile from shore, that may not even be possible.

Thinking of heading up to Miltona in a few weeks here with a new but used bow mount trolling motor to "test".. Or so I told my wife.... Going to "test" the trolling motor on walleyes. Any suggestions on speed? General areas that are known producers? Heck, if you can just give me a side of the lake (e.g. north/south/east/west side), that would be helpful. Thanks!!

And any suggestions on campgrounds would be great too.. Looking for something where the campsite is right next to shore so I can just leave the boat beached overnight. Please, any info would be great. Plan to head out there maybe a few times this year and spend some $$$

Planning to be out there tomorrow. i can give you a report after that. I was told that the lake was froze over on Sat but not sure what the warmer weather and precip effected the lake this week. I also had a report that someone was out in one of the bays Sunday.

The report is that there is 4 inches and I am sure that there is more now with the colder temps.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
