Green Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Any fishing reports on Green? How about for for walleyes, pannies, pike or smallies? I was thinking of heading out there on Sunday. Gotta love chasing those fish and football smallies in the fall!

Thinking about heading to Green Lake tomorrow and was just wondering how the NW access is, ice conditions, and if people are driving on the lake? Any info would be appreciated.

Lots of vehicles (Full size trucks too)being driven on the lake. People are driving out on the main access by Mels and also the sheriffs access on the NW side of the lake. Planning on putting my perm out tomorrow.

The area of Green Lake I'm fishing, west side, has about 15 inches of ice, curious if thats what others are finding on the lake. How about the east side?

I am heading to Green for the day Saturday. Does anyone have any tips on where I can get into some panfish. We always catch some nice bluegills off the dock in the summer, but I'm not sure where they go in the winter. Thanks in advance.

Its been a couple weeks since I've been out there but from what I've heard the walleye bite has been kinda slow. I'm planning on heading out there this weekend to try my luck.

I know awhile back people were catching a few crappies but I haven't really heard anything lately. I haven't tried for them yet I'm still trying to figure out the eyes.

i've tried a few different lakes in the area....from what i can tell (could just be me) but most lakes are kinda slow this year....ice came really quick, then came the snow, just not really sure if the fish ever got set. Of course this could just be the huge amounts of fishing pressure on the lakes....

I haven't found a consistent bite for walleyes yet on the west side but the general trend has been getting slower & smaller. I'm thinking of changing focus to look for crappies on NE side. How is the ice out of the county park?

Anybody been out there this week? Just wondering if the slush is all froze up and how it is getting around. Anybody have any luck out there lately? I was out sunday and the little perch were thicker than I've seen all year, then when the sun started going down I managed to catch a couple nice eyes and lost a couple more.

I guess nobody has been out all week. No worries answered my own question, slush is froze solid. Pretty easy getting around just kinda rough. Fishing was really slow tonight though.

Fished Green hard this weekend with friends and while we saw fish on the camera we couldn't get them to bite. Between tip-ups and 2 houses had about every depth covered. Pulled the house off this morning (very rough going off) and will start trying to find panfish.

3 kids,

I will be on green this weekend looking for some crappies.

Just wondering if you have been out at all this week and if the fish are getting a little more aggresive? Any info would be appreciated!!

I won't be out on Green this weekend. Spent a lot time on Green last weekend moving twice over 3 days. It was a buddies fishing weekend, 6 guys and 12 lines down from Friday noon till Sunday morning. 1 Walleye, 1 crappie and several small perch. Saw fish on the camera but couldn't get them to bite (mostly walleye). Had 1 very nice walley lay down right next to the camera.

I pulled the house off on Sunday. I have a family get together on Sat. and might try Ringo on Sunday.

Was out on Green Sat. afternoon till about 8:30 fishing for some pies. No luck had them on the vex and camera. I threw everything I had at them and nothing. Could have been the area we tried or it just was not my day!!! smirk

Sounds familar! I think it is the lake, evidently better forage being provided. With this snow it is going to make for tough going on the lakes, might have to wait for open water!

I am hiring a v plow to plow a road from browns landing to co park 5 to fish my way off the lake.Going over some of my fav late winter spots.Hope this will happen in the next couple days.I am hoping to afford 4 hrs.with some spurs off to key spots.I will post when he will be out there,so if you need to get your house off let the plow guy know,I am sure he will help you out.If you have a spot you want to fish he will most likely help as well.If you have suggestions on a certain route going over and along breaks or areas of production that would be great.I have a few in mind but all help would be appreciated. All I ask is do not drill holes and flood the road.I am targeting crappie but if you are going after the mud carp,I guess I will take those suggestions as well.

Plowed path out there your inviting everyone to your spot. Not addvised but your choice. I've pulled 5 people out in the last three days out there travel sucks. What size fishouse do you have? I got a truck that gets around pretty good.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

MN DNR posted April 13 as Ice out date for Vermilion

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
