Yea, we had a wheel house and a couple portables out to spread things out a bit, but Saturday night about 11:00pm we went out and took down both portables and just fished out of the wheel house Sunday morning. The wind was crazy. Even with a bit of snow to bank them in, it looked like the wind was going to buckle the pipes on the portables so we didn't want to risk it.

Ice conditions on Little Ida are excelent 11 to 12 inches of great ice. Crappie fishing has been slow but the eyes have been cooperating in depths of 18 to 25ft of water.

Heading up this weekend, haven't been out since the 4th of July. Any one having any success out there?

I was there last weekend. The walleye bite seems to be early morning 5:30-8:30. Caught a quite a few small fish. 10-13". Did have few nice ones mixed in. They are spread out. Caught some Jigging on Saturday and Rigging with a leech on Sunday. The weed line seem to be the best.

Good luck:)

I did pretty well...lots of smaller ones (10-13) kept 5 15-17 and one @ 23 went back (obviously). We had a good meal.

Was actually messin around with my leadcore setup, figured I'd give it a go...3:00pm bright n sunny when I landed the 23".

All the rest were caught on riggs and leeches.

Good job on the lead core! I've had some luck this year using it as well.

How deep were you locating fish while rigging?

Thanks

Thanks 555. I'm still learning the lake and still don't have a rotation of favorite spots. Shoreline weed edges or deeper mid lake humps?

Any tips are appreciated.

Have you been up there in the last couple of weeks? I'm thinking redtails are going to be the bait of choice from here on out?

I couldn't believe how quickly the surface temps have dropped.

Good Morning jhall555.

I was on Ida all day Saturday.. Fishing was pretty okay for the day. Only managed 4 walleye's in the morning. 3 small ones and 1 17". Caught 5 more Saturday afternoon. All small.

Saturday night about a hour before sunset was pretty good though. My fishing partner and I caught 15 walleye's. Most were 14"-14.5" We had a 22" and a 16". All fish went back in. We fished the east side of the lake.. It was getting pounded all day by the wind. We found are fish in the weeds. We used a jig and minnow.

Will be back for a 4 day trip and 3 day trip in October.

Thanks for the report marbleye.

Heading up this weekend, any reports as of late from anyone? Surface temps? We will be taking the dock out this time up... won't stop me from fishing, unless it's down pouring and 40 degrees.

I've been out fighting the wind a couple of times.

Water temp is around 53 degrees. Fishing action has been tough. Fished the breaks, weeds and the only slow action I've had is deep where I've marked fish at 40 -45 feet and caught a couple smaller ones.

Hope the wind dies down some for the weekend.

Marbleye have you been back up to Ida for one of your late fall trips. I was contemplating next weekend and was hoping to find out if anyone is having some success.

Fish have slid down deep. Caught 3 nice keepers yesterday morning - 45- 52'. Look for deeper areas adjacent to mid lake humps -- valleys between them. Jig and minnow.

We took the inlaws dock and boat out last weekend, getting over to Betsy Ross was sketchy...the landing there was HORRIBLE.

I put my boat in Saturday evening over at Big Horn, I cannot believe how low the water is...fishing was slow for me, ended up pheasant hunting most of the weekend.

Good afternoon. Was up the past to Weekends. Fishing was very good as far as quanties 2 weekes ago. Lots of small fish. Was unable to get to where I wanted to because of the wind. 2 ofus did manage to catch 75 fish in 4 days.. Lots of fish 10-14".. Deeper water. 35-45' Jig and minnow.

Last weekend we caught less fish but better quality.. In 3 days we boated 35 fish. Released 5 over 22" The biggest being 25" We found the bigger fish on to of some flats in 30'-38'. We jig and live baited them with Golden shiners. Most fish were between 15-18". The smaller ones were still deeper. We mostly focused on bigger fish.

We fished mostly the north east end of the lake.

So who is planning on fishing this coming weekend? I'm not able to get out deer hunting opening weekend so I'll be chasing some fish hopefully.

The family (minus me) was up at the in-laws over Thanksgiving. Still open obviously with the warm weather. Even with the colder temps., it's still going to be a bit. Predicted temps. to get into the 40's by Sunday.

We've typically been able to move around fairly well by Christmas/New Years but prior to that is typically first breakline fishing

Main lake is wide open. Bays have a skin of ice on them but I expect it will be gone as the weather gets milder this week.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
