Had about 9" of good ice with slush and snow over it this weekend. Had a guy pull out a large permanent with a truck and then they had two other vehicles and a wheeler parked right next to it while they fished. Not for me but they pulled it off.

Marbleye -

I'll be heading up Friday evening as well, what depths/structure were you trying on opener?

My dad had a cabin on Ida for years. Can't even begin to guess the amount of hours I've spent on the lake. We usually found that around Memorial Day the fishing started to really pick up. The old farmer who my dad bought the land from always said " When the cottonwoods bloom the fish start to tune". Not sure about his advise, he always carried a 1/2 pint in his back pocket. smilecrazy

Ah, good to be thinking about summer fishing on Ida again!! Boat is washed, vacuumed, waxed and reorganized after a very successful jaunt up around Deer River last weekend and I'm out of here tomorrow night for a long weekend of fishing (well as much water time I can get from Momma with having our first born in Feb.).

Was up on the opener and what an opener it was...weather wise that is. I did get a couple but it was nothing to write home about. Found some crappies but they ran a tad on the small side. Didn't hit the water all that hard however as with the nice weather I stuck a lot of time into getting projects done around the cabin so that I don't have to do it this weekend.

Opener structure was the typical shoreline points and twists and turns in the shoreline breaks. I was bouncing around that 20 to 35 ft. range.

My latest trip up to the cabin was and extended weekend over the 4th. I'd have to say that I had an ok weekend given the howling winds on Fri. and Sat. Put some walleyes in the boat every time out but it was definately work. The walleyes seem to be more scattered out and somewhat in a transition to some deeper structure. I still picked up a couple on the weedline but also caught some out fishing 35 or so ft. Both leeches and crawlers. In thinking about things, I probably should have switched things up and covered some structure pulling plugs or even spinners. Bumped into some real nice sunfish along the deep weed edge and had a couple spots that I couldn't keep the smallies off. Nice smallies as well. Smallest was 15" with the largest being 17.5".

Not sure when I'll be up next as it's time to try to get some things done around home.

Fished IDA last week pulling crankbaits running 10 - 30 feet. Most we boated in one outing was 3 walleyes on a windy afternoon. Lotsa bass and northerns mixed in as well. Sizes were 16 - 22". All were along shore structure - couldn't get any to bite over the mid lake humps.

Haven't been up since the 4th. Working on my "to do" list around home. Planning a 5 day weekend here in the middle of Aug. and hopefully some of the mid lake structure will be holding some fish by then.

We will be heading up a week from today, planning on working it hard. I'll post my findings when I get back.

I'm getting the itch. We've got 2 weeks to go before we're going to spend 5 days or so up there. The closer we get, the longer I'm thinking of staying. I know I'm going to be forking out some $$ and begin to arm myself with some redtails.

Heading up today right after work, hopefully the weather holds out.

Has anyone had any luck pulling bigger spinners w/ crawlers or are red tails my best bet right now?

Thanks!

I was marking quite a few on mid lake humps 28'~35', they wouldn't take anything. I could get them to rise 5', take a sniff and turn around, but this was Sunday morning after the big storm rolled through (at least that's the excuse I'm going with.) Pretty slow going besides the pike and bass if you go after them.

WW- That same spot from last year you mentioned.

Hey thanks marbleye. Been awhile since I ran into you/your dad on the water. I'm assuming you're not going to be up this weekend but potentially our paths will cross come Labor day.

Yea I will be spending more and more time coming up next month and Oct. Crawlers seem to be the ticket this past weekend.

Well just got in and it was an alright morning. Got 6 keeping 4. Put fish in the boat all week but it is far from fast and furious. My best luck has been on redtails and its been "hole hopping" all over to get them. Did get a couple on crawlers however as well. Not agressive at all. Had to go over fish a couple of times and move real slow to trigger them. Best luck has been in deeper water. 25' to 38'.

I should have clarified for those that may have not seen any of my past posts. When I say fish, I'm talking about walleyes. It was a good vacation on Ida and the fishing was ok. I didn't go into it with all that high of expectation (as compared to the first part of June) so the action that was had was considered a success. Always good when one can get enough for a meal of fresh fish!! Until Labor Day...

Oh, Cenex and Christopherson's had the "redtails not available yet" answer. Fleet Farm had an ample supply. Why? I don't know. Different supplier? Same reason one can't get a true jumbo leech in Alex I guess. This is a seperate topic however.

They kinda looked at me funny when I asked for them the other weekend.

I'll be up Labor Day weekend, hopefully they are still around.

FYI for those of you heading up Labor Day weekend

Talked to Christopherson's, they said they still don't have red tails and probably won't be getting any this year.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
