Good to know Bob.  I was getting mostly small sunfish there.  Those beetle spins can be very effective.

What are some "tricks" you've used with them? So far, I've been having the best luck with slower and more steady retrieves in 6' - 7' depth so I'm guessing I'm not too far off the bottom. Water is getting into bloom so it's not easy to see into it very well. Tried lift and drop retrieve with little to no success. Getting a lot of little ticks, which I suspect are smaller fish. I'm using 1/16oz.

I've used them targeting panfish and walleye when they are in the weeds.  You can cast or troll them effectively.   If you need to run them shallower run them shorter or clamp on a bobber to slowly troll while controlling the depth. Tip with a small price of gulp to add some scent.  I've had some luck with a jigging retrieve as well like you described at times.

Lots of ways to fish them I'm sure but this is how I often run them.  They are pretty weed free  unless the weeds are stringy.

Right now there is a lot of algae growing on the reeds and that wraps up if it get close so I find I have to keep a little distance. This makes it a little more challenging to cast into the reeds.

We've been big fans of the 3" minnows, and 5" leeches, along with crawlers, great color combinations, with floating versions ta boot.??     Found the pinched half crawlers to work great for adding spin to "slow death" presentation...

I have used  gulp with good success for largemouth, but had not tried it otherwise.  I gave it a shot in a number of presentations.  The good news was that fished side-by-side with a real crawler, the rate of getting bites was about the same.  The bad news is that I still could not keep the sunnies and perch off of it and I went through as many gulp worms as real worms.  Maybe I need to use an o-ring like when Senko fishing.  I like to fish eyes with plugs too, but even that does not work even my large plugs are also consistently catching 3" perch.  I did get one nice fish after catching a 3" perch the fish hit the perch.  I think I need to do some deep water bobber fishing with large minnows.  Well it is off to lake of the woods in a couple weeks so I will get my fill of action there.

Lake pretty much locked up I think two nights ago. Haven't seen anyone out yet in the Buck Point, Battle Point, Schultz's Bay or Moon Bar area yet. Still to early I think. Haven't been over to Manthey"s Bay so don't know if anyone is venturing out there yet. That area usually locks up early. Usually there are a couple of spear houses out early in the Town Bay, Peterson's Bay, Two mile area but didn't see any out there yesterday. More often than not there is a ice heavy early in the season that stretches from Battle Point, kind of WSW across to the rushes on the west side of the lake. It pop by Battle Point yesterday morning but only went about a quarter of the way across. Looked healed up this morning.

This ATV and fish house went through this weekend in Douglas County in a spot where the ice went from 8 inches to a half-inch. Luckily, nobody was injured.

Come on people....gotta check the ice first. Then bring out your gear. I drilled 20 holes checking out my lake. It took 40 minutes.

This was on Geneva.

An ATV also went down in Lake Oscar Friday night this past weekend. It was foggy and they didn't see the open water.

I also heard there is open water on Reno.

I was out on Maple Lake east of Osakis and found 9" over 8' of water. As I went further out from shore the ice thickness got narrower. It was down to about 7" over 18' of water.

How did you do out there Bob?

Found a few perch in the 15' depth. Had a couple hits from something much larger in the 18' depth but they straightened my hooks so I never did find out what they were.

How's the eye bite been out there? I got out Saturday night and landed one bigger fish. Pretty slow otherwise. Didn't mark anything Sunday morning. Few permies out on the lake. There was 11'' of ice where I was but know for a fact it is not like that on the whole lake

looks like the lake is showing more ice movement!!  be safe all!!

I noticed this morning that it had heaved out in Miller Bay kind of between the DNR access and Four Mile Bar. Really raising heck with my shore. Going to have to take a sledge hammer to my shore tomorrow so I can get out.

Nope. I'm up in the Schultz's Bay area. Is Joe's marine still there? I thought he quit about 7 or 8 years ago.

I see him around but I think he's done too..  Ok I know where you are..  did ya have to take a sledge hammer to the ice??

Didn't get to swing the sledge on Saturday. Had a bum ankle that has kept me sidelined and was feeling pretty good on Friday so I got out and about shopping. May have over did it and suffered a little bit of a set back but it's pretty good today. Should be able to swing the hammer tomorrow.

Thanks for the help offer Mike. I was out the following Monday and knocked it down the best I could. Ankle and foot held up fine. Mostly worked on the neighbors and a little on mine. His was easier to break up. Was out there Christmas day hammering away at it for the third time. I think I have it knocked down enough to get the house out. It just keeps growing. I'm hoping this snow will slow it down.

Prior to this snow there were a couple people starting to drive 1/2 tons out, but I was on 8.5 inches on christmas day out there. I have a hard time believing the 10+ inches of snow and gnarly winds did the lake any good and even with the cold coming in, I doubt we will gain a lot of ice. I have been wrong before though.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
