Car went through the ice over the weekend near the city access. Luckily it was on that end and only in 4' of water. I got this information 2nd hand.

Was a small truck on the ice by buck point yesterday. Ice is inconsistent yet check one spot and it's 2 inches less then a different  spot.

Went out of battle point today. First time ever on the lake. Ice was 10 to 12 inches. Seen a few trucks out on the main lake. Fishing sucked! Drilled anywhere from 5 to 45 ft, and only caught 2 tiny little perch.

Was up there this weekend and also couldn't catch a thing. Marked a few but no takers seemed like the Dead Sea.

Finding 10"+ of ice and should be gaining more this week with the cold. Seeing some vehicles on ice and once one goes they all go. Please be safe

I was out on Lake Osakis this last weekend on the main lake and everywhere I drilled was 19" of ice.  Didn't have any walleyes, but did catch a bunch of small perch with a couple decent keepers, and had a ton of deep water (25') northern action.  Kept 4 all between 28-30", and lost probably another 6-8.

1/14 -1/15:

Was out 1/14 -1/15 with my wife and daughter.  We ended up with 9 northerns and 5 perch.  Caught one dinky walleye.  Has anyone been seeing any number of eyes lately?

Also, looks like Wednesday night is suppose to drop temps below freezing again.  How is it out there right now?  Is there a fair amount of water on the ice?  Need to get back out and jack up the shack a bit before the freeze.

Thanks The Tuna, And looks like temps are gonna start getting below freezing again tonight, so I'm gonna take the drive after work today and get it done.

Was just out on ice and a big difference from yesterday.  Most water has found a hole or two or ten to drain back down.  Minimal water on the lake once get away from the accesses at least on the north end of the lake.  Houses should be fine unless in a low spot with no holes anywhere near.

So... for safety sake, are there a lot of springs in Osakis that start opening water that I should be concerned about in regards to getting my shack off the lake in the following weeks?  I came in the public access on the west side and am on the main lake...

There are no springs in Osakis that I'm aware of. You may want to take your house off pretty soon through there saying the weather is supposed to be in the 50s next weekend.

Anyone catching fish out there?  I heard it was really slow this winter.  Hoping to be able to get up there the last weekend of Feb. with my kids.

Thanks for the heads up Fishing Frenzy.  I had just noticed last weekend that about 20 yards south of the west landing right at the first few feet of ice next to shore, there's open water.  So I was concerned that it may be a bigger issue and something well known.  Doesn't sound like thats the case, but I'm gonna be there next weekend anyway, then will bring my shack home.

So far this year I've caught a lot of northerns 25"-28", and quite a few perch.  It seems like wherever I moved I had northerns hitting anything I had down, so I'm assuming that this is the case with everyone else??  Didn't find any crappies, and only caught one little throw back walleye about 12".

I've been fishing this lake all winter and finally got into some crappies.  They were only taking bobbers, couldn't jig one up.  Pink was the hottest color, but green and also yellow were decent.  Plain colored #7 hooks worked better than small jigs at times.

Ice is in real good condition right now.  The warm days have been working on the snow that was on the lake from the last snow, so it should be fine through the week.  The west landing is heaved, but passable by truck.  Wouldn't recommend it if you're pulling a shack.  The south landing is getting a little messy, but is just fine for now.  Haven't seen the north landing.

mntim,

Do you have a shack you're bringing up?

Was out there Tue.... Ice was getting soft on top. Access was in ok shape. Don't think you will be getting a wheelhouse out unless it's a real small light one.  Had 16-20 inches of ice yet

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
