I must have been doing something wrong lol boated only 1 14" eye. Fished my normaly productive spots down towards the lower end of the lake. Oh well that's why they call it fishing and not catching smile

Thanks Finlander I’ll have to give that a go. I pulled lindy with spinner’s crawler and leeches. I haven’t fished since they killed off the pond weed. I was like where are the weeds lol had I confused “thought maybe I launched in someone’s swimming pool” no real weed line to fish.

We hit the water for a long weekend last weekend and hit lots of small Perch on Friday and Saturday with the Walleye bite pretty quiet off Johnson's in the evening. Maybe the weather was too perfectgrin

EARLY Sunday morning the Walleyes picked it up quite a bit, but we were back in the house having breakfast by 9am and done for the morning. After breakfast the Bluegills came out and we pounded them in time for lunch. Great weekend of fishing after the weather was crazy for awhile there.

Gills must be pretty spread out now. In the short time I have been out have caught them still up in the pencils all the way out to weed edge. More consistently in the former.

One of the main lakes I normally fish is is filled with this carp and really do like it for fishing, especially on the edges where it starts to thin out. Can understand as a shoreline owner how it would suck...but it is really nice for holding fish wink

Spent the week at Osakis with the family. July 7th-14th. Had a great time and great weather. Walleye bite was good...had to work around the slot and boated many 12-14 inchers but did have a fair amount of success catching some keepers 17-21 inch fish as well. Caught some nice sized Pike while fishing the walleye. Small perch were somewhat of a nuisance. Were planning on finding some crappies/sunnies but the walleye were keeping us busy. Night crawlers and leaches in 12-15 ft of water. Planning on heading back next year same time. Possibly a trip this Sept. for a few days with a small group of guys.

I've been wading out on battle point in the evening and getting a few crappies. The bite seems is better right at dark.

Just got back from a week on Osakis. Bite is going well and everthing is shallow. Caught all my crappies, gills, pike, and walleyes in water 7 feet or shallower. Caught all species all day long. Don't know if there biting any deeper because I didn't have to look deeper. Just run the shorelines till you find fish. We even caught a bonus 20" smallmouth. What a lake!

Went out last Thursday and brought out the Marcum for some open water ice fishing lol. Managed 9 walleyes from 8 am until 10am then they shut off. 6 were under 15 inches, and one 15" and 16". Lost an 18" at the top of the water without a net. Was fishing in 22 feet of water using fat head and rattlin flyer with a trebble hook. Ended the day with a 24" pig trolling in 8 feet of water with shallow rap perch style. Caught her in middle of the day.

Went out again Saturday and had no luck for the early morning bite. Weather was warmer and sunny with no wind. Ended up with a few 3lb northerns and some crappies. Dad caught his personal best 14" crappie while trolling for northern!!

Is the middle of Mantheys bay safe? 4+ inches of ice?? Have heard different reports on ice thickness with the snow...heading up early tomorrow, but don't want to wander around aimlessly if ice is still sketchy.

I was there yesterday and saw several sleds zooming around from the south side boat landing. The ice was 4 plus even with the snow cover everywhere we checked. But as with everything else, always be cautious and do your own checking. I imagine there will be many more people out Saturday. Good Luck fishing... we had none. frown

Thanks

Made it out today. Was raining when we got there at 8am. Turned to snow around 10:30 Set up for walleyes in 20 ft of water. Tried chubby darter, minnows, treble with minnow head, fathead, but no takers. Only a few looks. Decided to try for panfish at 11:30 and was a good decision!! We hammered sunnies and crappies. 19-21 ft water. Were using red urolarvae on small tungsten hooks. Fish were suspended anuwhere from 3-6 feet off of the bottom. We would check holes until the christmas tree showed up on our depth finders, and pick up a few at one hole and move to the next. Funny thing was how hard they bit for only a short window of time. Bit like crazy from 11-1, then just shut down. Maybe the front had something to do with it.... Freezer is empty, so we kept a 2 man limit for today. Oh, and ice is 5"+ with the top 1" cloudy and a good 4" of clear ice below. Atv's were driving out on Mantheys.

Sartell angler, were you just fishing in Manthey's Bay? I was probably going to give it a try Tuesday for sunnies and crappies.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
