To me it sounds like you're getting the shaft. Out of all the times I have hired a guide, they have Always provided gas And bait!
I am heading up to the Angle with 3 others in a couple of weeks. We decided to get a guide for a day cuz none of us have fished this part of the lake before. Question - what is customary as far as tipping goes? Should/does it depend on the amt of fish he puts us on (performance based) or a straight % of the fee ($250 per day), others?
Also, I was surprised to find out the $250 does not cover bait/gas and we will be charged extra for that. Is this typical or are we getting bent?

Little Joe:
Find someone eles to guide you....
$150 is the going rate.
You should pay the camp, not the guide
for his services. At the end of the day
then you tip the guide. $50 cash. More
if you get your fish and if the guide is
willing to show you some tips+tricks
not just catch your fish and take you back.
Good Luck

Little Joe,
I've used a lot of guides in the Angle area in the last seven or eight years and that price is out of line. If you pay $250, that better include everything including the provisions for a shore lunch. If that's what they're quoting you, shop around. If you need info, post an e-mail address.

Is that $250 for 4 guys? How many boats are you taking? If that is for 4 guys, then that is only a little over $60 per person. Then if you are taking 2 boats, there is more gas. I don't know. I'm staying at Duckbay lodge and we got a guide for a day. It is $150 a day for 2 people and $25 for each additional person. It includes 8 a.m.-5pm, they make the shore lunch, they clean the fish, and they package the fish. It doesn't include bait, and the guide fishes out of our boat that comes with the cabin. I hope this helps.

It get's worse - they're also charging us $7 a head for shore lunch!
Here's the deal, I was a late addition to a trip that was planned months ago. Because I was lowering lodging cost for the group, they agreed to pick up the guide as long as I picked up the tip - hence my original question. They booked the guide through the resort we're staying at. Based on your feedback, we will try to get out of this rather lopsided arrangement. Would appreciate it if folks could make some recommendations on short notice. We'll be arriving on 6/12.
Thanks to all for the help. CONSIDER ME INFORMED (a bit late).........

$50 tip, more if you catch fish and they give you tips! Let's see, I think you are paying the guide to put you on fish so you can catch them, is he/she not? If $150 is the amount for a full day and you have 3-4 people, that may be appropriate, but if you are paying that amount per person, I would say it is out of line (the tip amount). Based on what other areas charge, $150 a day for a boat is a great deal, however. I am not from that area, but does someone else have an opinion on this tip amount or is this coming from a guide!

Just got back from our trip. The guide was $250 per day for 4 people. We used the guide's boat and had to pay for gas/bait and $7 per person for shore lunch. He really worked to put us on fish and we ended up driving about 80 miles a day (lot's of expensive resort gas). Caught 60-70 walter's a day plus some bonus smallies and pike.
After 2 days of fishin, we gave him a $100 tip.
As I said, this was our first time with a guide so I have no idea if the above is/was in line with others. Sounds like it may be on the spendy side? Guess it's all about how much one is willing to pay to catch fish. Bottom line is we caught a lot and had a blast!
FYI - major mayfly hatch over the weekend!
