Well, here is another. I had my step daughter walk in with me Saturday afternoon. Thinking since the bear was on the bait when I baited Friday afternoon that 2 in 1 out would be a slam dunk. Well it took way longer then I thought it would. I was sitting at 4:30 and waited until almost dark. I was watching the lite fade away and thinking to myself the bear is going to be a no show, I maybe have another 10 minutes and I will have to head out. It wasn't about 10 seconds later I caught some movement out the side window of my ground blind. Holy Carp!! There is the bear walkingg right down my trail to the logs. Watched walk in and then walk around to the back side of the logs. Dang it now he is facing. Had the old 12 ga. pointed and ready and after what seemed like forever(few minutes) he turned and started to climb up onto the logs. I let it rip and the bear jumped and took off running. I could here him crashing thru the brush for a ways and then silence. Called my wife and step daughter to come and help me track. Had good lung blood right at the site , but then we couldn't find any more. So we started working in the direction that he went and I kept crossing over where i thought he went. Finally good blood trail. Went about 80 yards and piled up between 2 birch trees. Now the work begins. Dressed out at 180lbs( I used the Boar's weighing system with the bathroom scale). My first bear, A good start for me. Thing had big paws and a big head.

Here's a couple from opening day. Both shot around 7:30pm by brothers. The one on the left was 275lbs field dressed and the one on the right was 230lbs field dressed. The one on the left had a massive skull and some huge paws (pic doesn't do these bears justice). I don't remember the last time we had 2 200+ lb bears on the same day let alone the same season. I saw a small bear on opening night at about 7:50pm but let him eat because he was of similar size to 2 that I've taken in the past. I maybe should've taken him considering I didn't see a bear the next 2 nights and might not be able to get out again this season. Another hunter in our group saw one opening day at 4:20pm but could not get a shot with the bow. He also didn't see another one on Sunday or Monday. He lives near our hunting location so he should be able to get out plenty more this season starting tonight. On opening day 4 of the 5 hunters in our group saw bears.

Nice bear Bman, did you get a weight on him?

Hey Snoozebutton,

How's things up north going? Anybody get any bigs ones over the bait yet?

Saw a few while out running my bealges not far from you. I have 5 acres down at the end of Ross Road.

This critter only weighed 240#. Not too bad for a MN bear smile But it looks huge next to my 160# frame grin

240 is nothing to sneeze at. We passed up the first bear that came in and my friends saw the pic of him and guessed him at close to 300. Since then nothing but smaller ones. Kind of kicking myself for telling my grandson to hold off.

Normally I wouldn't but that big guy had been coming in an hour before dark for a month. Then 2 days before the opener he turned nocturnal. Had to hold out at least the first day for him.

B Man, we're half way between Springbrook and Earl on Chappell Rd.

Appreciate the offer Jarrid and we may take you up if we haven't gotten one by that last weekend in September. Getting my grandson out isn't as easy as I thought it would be, seems like almost every night he's got something going on at school.

Got a couple bear pix on my deer cameras. Was finally able to get up to bait yesterday and going to hunt next week. Are any of these possibilities to shoot? I believe the first is a cub so obviously not a shooter. This is my first year bear hunting. Hopefully they are survived the first week.

Well, the 2 biggest guys never showed up again so my grandson decided to take the next biggest one that turned out to be 230#. Not bad for a first bear and he was real happy about it. I turned the camera on video before we got into the stand and here he is a moment or two before the shot. My son in law took some after pics but I don't have those yet since it was pretty late before we got out of the woods.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
