I was just wondering how to go about getting into some small mouth fishing. I will be fishing out of Duck Bay lodge on June 7th and I am taking my 10 year old nephew on his fisrt Canada trip. This will also be my first time on LOW and it has been years since I have tangled with a bronze back. He has never caught one but loves to fish for bucket mouths with me hear in Southern MN. I can't wait to see the look on his face when he hooks into a nice one. He is quite the little fisherman so artificial baits are no problem for him. I was just wondering what to tell him to bring. I told him that he only gets to take one of his takle boxes. Maybe I'll have to borrow some of his stuff. I think he has more than me. Maybe live bait will be the way to go? I appriciate any help on the subject. Thanks

Hey there Mr Walleye! I grew up in the Morson area but I now reside in Baudette. I was up in the north end of Miles bay with a cousin and a friend of mine and man did we get some action. Look for bays with boulders, some fallen trees and rocky shorelines and points. We threw spinnerbaits but most of our smallies were caught on tubes. Tubes that are natural color like dark brown and dark green with a little glitter. In just less than 2 hours we boated about 25 or so smallies and at one time us three guys each had one on. It was a blast. Lighter line is good ( i used 8 lb test ) and a spinning rod with a good back bone and just cast it into shore and bounce these tubes off the bottom and hang on. 3/8 oz was ideal for us. So stop somewhere before you head up this way and get yourself some tubes ( 3 to 3 1/2 inch ) I just got me some at gander Mountain in Bemidji this weekend. Who knows I might be up there too next weekend but I hope this helps. Good luck fishing Brian

Thanks Brian for the reply. I am no stranger to tube baits. I got turned on to them by a guy when I was fishing the St.Croix. I have one whole tray in my tackle box full of them. I was also wondering what time of the day is best and how big the fish are? Do you ever use suspending crankbaits or is slow the way to go right now? Thanks again!

Hey Fastkaw,
Nice to hear that you will be up there at the same time. I'll keep an EYE out for you. It doesn't sound like this is your first time up to the lodge. I was wondering what you are doing for bait. I just want to make things go as smooth as possible for my nephew and father=in-law. I love to put other people on fish, almost as much as catching them myself. Cast me an email if you have time. I'd love to hear about some past experiences.
[email protected]
Hope to hear from ya! mrwalleyee

We caught ours in the afternoon til about 3 or so then we had to head in because my buddy had to be somewhere. But as far as size fo I think the biggest was about 4 lbs and the smallest was about a pound maybe but all in all it was fun. Only one of the bass was caught on a plug and it was a regular deep diving shad rap nothing special. I think something that was lowered in front of them they hit but tubes worked the best for us. I never really tried for bass in the rain or when its overcast but hey ya never know. I always liked to go for them in the heat of the day. Good luck up there and let me know how ya do as for I will checking this out later or whenever I get off the road. Brian

I just wanted to post how I did while I was up there. I fished from Sunday to wednesday. Walleye's in the morning, then pike and then smallies. We only got 10 smallies in 3 days of fishing. I was hoping for some more, but my nephew got a 15"er that gave him a big battle and he loved it. We got them all casting small cranks up to shore. I mean right up to shore. If you didn't land within a foot of the shore, you didn't get a fish. Trouble was that we were getting hung up in the rocks more than we were catching fish. We still had a blast and thanks for all of your help. Hey fastkaw, I was just wondering how the rest of your fishing days went. I sure was impressed with everything at Duckbay. We are already clearing our calenders for next year. Maybe we'll try a little earlier like you do. I want to see if we can get some bigger pike next year.
[This message has been edited by mrwalleyee (edited 06-18-2003).]

mrwalleyee
Glad to here you had a good trip to
Duck Bay. Dave+Sheree know how to take
care of their guest. And not overpower you.
Our trip went well around 80 walleyee
for the week. (brought home 6)
Northern fishing was a little slow, but
the lake being so low has the fish in
all the wrong places for spring time fishing.
I hope to go back in the spring around the
3rd. week of May next year.
The Pike fishing usually much better.
But the walleyee can be slow...
I can say it in three word and the first to
don't count weather weather weather.
If you get there at the right time you
can't keep the off your hook, or it will
snow on you all day long. And fishing will be slow.
One more thing, if the water had bin at a
normal level. June is the best time of year
to fish LOTW. You can catch all the species
just about anywere on the lake.
fastkaw

------------------
Born to fish just
don't ask me to eat one
