I'd like a suggestion or two about resorts in the Miles Bay, Obabiken (spelling?) Bay, West side of Sabaskong Bay or East or South side of Little Traverse Bay.
I know about the Reel 'em Inn and I'm not interested in this type of resort. They offer something called the "American Plan". This basically means that you have to stay for several nights and you pay for three big meals per day (whether you use them or not). I want to go there and fish. All I need is a place to stay for a night.
I'd like to start fishing Sat morning at about 7:00 and fish until 9:00 or 10:00 that night. Then sleep for seven hours and get up and do it again and leave for home.
I can't see any reason to dump a bunch of money on food on a fancy place if this is the kind of trip I want. Any suggestions? I'd even settle for a place that would let us pitch a tent on their property. Is there any place to camp (legally) in the areas I mentioned? Would any of the resorts let us do this?
Scoot

All of the resorts Eastwind refered to are main-land resorts. I believe you can get a permit to camp on the islands, not sure though. I just checked on Mylie's Resort web sight and it looks like they have tent sights by the day. It may be worth checking out. Good luck. Let us know how fishing was when you return.

Each of the resorts that I mentioned are on the mainland at Morson, not on an island. As far as whether or not any of the island resorts would let you pitch a tent I would not know. I have had limited conversations with the island resort owners due to them being too expensive and only offering the American Plan". You can get a cabin at Mylie's for $95 canadian per night for one or two people and $105 for three. Buena Vista is at $95 and $110 Canadian. The Canadian dollar is worth about 70% of ours so you can get a cabin for much less than the $100.00 per night that you are willing to spend on a tent site. Buena Vista also lists campground accomodations but I could not get to the price per night on the website. Just call them. I looked for a web site for Red Lodge just by typing in " Red wing lodge Morson". I found it right away. As easy as it is to set up on the mainland and then travel to the fishing I would not bother with an island resort.

We are going up again to an island and we park at Morson. The name of the resort is Tamarack Lodge. I do not know if they allow tents but they might.
We are getting a cabin for 235 per person for 4 nights. Good Luck.
[This message has been edited by Rick (edited 06-11-2003).]

Tamarack Lodge has a housekeeping plan where you don't have to pay for their meals. You brings your own food. Much better deal.

Scoot,
As far as I know, all of the "Island Resorts" in that area will only offer the American Plan. I agree with you that this plan does not offer good value for those of us that want to fish seriously, have our own boat etc. Your best access to the resorts with a housekeeping cabin would be from Morson. You are within 10 miles from the North end of Miles Bay from there and closer to all of the other spots you listed.
Mylie's place would be my first choice, though it can be tough to get less than a full week rental there once Summer is here. Buena Vista is a close second and will usually have some vacancies of less than a week all summer. Swen's resort works in a pinch but is not near as well maintained as the other two. Red wing is nice for big groups but spendy. The first three have web sights were you can get phone numbers to contact them. Good luck and have fun.
I almost forgot. I know that you can rent a site for a tent at Buena Vista. Mylies has year round sites for campers and might have tent sites available. With the exchange for US$ vs. Canadian $, though, motel or cabin rentals do not end up costing near what it costs to stay in a cabin the U.S.

Thanks Eastwind,
Do you happen to know the names of the islands each of these outfits are located on? I'll look up the first three on the net and see what I find, where's the last one at?
I'm sure we'll be going out of Morson again. We've been taking this trip for a few years, but never been able to stay over night anywhere. My understanding is that it's not legal to camp on any of the islands-that's still the case, isn't it?
I'm sure we'll put in at Morson as usual. You don't think any of the "Island Resorts" will accomidate us for a night? None you can think of would take $100 to let us pitch a tent and sleep for an evening??? Man, sounds like easy money to me. We're going to be there to fish- no beer, no women, no hell raising... just fishing.
Scoot

[This message has been edited by Scoot (edited 05-28-2003).]

How about a hotel/motel in Morson? Is there such a thing?

Posted

Marknamy is correct. Pelican Landing was rumored to be getting some rooms and/or cabins fit to rent as of last year. Buena Vista has what they refer to as "Motel rooms" but they are laid out like a cabin and go for the same price as a cabin ($90.00 per night Canadian or so)

No Hotel/Motel. The closest thing would be the rooms at Pelican Landing Restaurant in Morson. Buena Vista Resort may also have just rooms. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Scoot, I may be wrong but I think you can camp if you get a permit. Contact the office in the NW area and see what they say.
http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR/fishing/crownland.html
Hope this helps.

Scoot,
Give Muskie Bay Resort on Crow Lake a call. They have motel rooms, and a private access on Stevens Bay on LOW.
We stay there every March for our Shanty trip, and could not be happier with their hospitality.

There’s critters out and about. Get yourself some cellular trail cams and you’ll see.

It wouldn't be the first time I've heard the USS Skunked Again breaking ice! I left this morning, the rain really did a number to the ice. I'll bet the Partridge River will be open by the weekend.

My yard is pretty open, but narrow. I think I'll be fine with reception in the areas I'm thinking. I try to keep the hill somewhat natural, but my wife wants to see the lake better. The video's I've watched, they have topped the trees and mounted the dish. I would this the swaying would affect the signal. Does Starlink help you with using WiFi for calling? My T-Mobile service sux at the cabin. Did you bury your cable?

I'm on the wide part of the channel going in to Black Bay. We won't see Paul B. For years.

Welcome back. Wow it's been since 2018 it looks like. Did you ever "I'm tightening up my footprint and want to build on my Bozeman lot on the Gallatin"? 😏

You're probably right. This isn't official since I've already lost, but I'll make my supplemental guess for May 6th since it's still open. 😄 As long as I can snake my way along the shore and/or plow through some dark ice on the 8th, I'll be happy. I love aluminum boats!

For all of my "problems" with getting a clear signal it's worth it. I can spend more time at the lake because I can work during the day and play or get things done at night. Toss in that I can record and watch a football/hockey/basketball game when I'm done at the end of the day....priceless. Like your place, our property is more natural and I was worried about having to cut down a bunch of trees. I like that people have to get up close to see our place from the lake through the trees. Luckily I didn't have to do much to get enough a signal that works for me. If I needed to be on video calls, I probably would run the dish down to the shore to get a better view of the sky. BTW - the main problem with mounting the dish on a tree is that the tree still has a canopy that will block the signal. The best option would be to top a tree and then mount it on the clear-cut top.
