Rain , Northwest winds and cold water temps if we ever got a week of decent stable weather them big fish might just turn on and start chomping baits in typical summer fashion. However our situation was not such but found my wife catching fish and me being the extreme net man. at any rate she dont get to be on the water like I am so I was happy to see her land a 48 incher on deer lake and a 49 on northstar after dark.

At times I get accused of catching the fish and letting her hold them. However when your muskie guiding , fishing tourneys basically gone all the time and you have a wife and 3 kids its very easy for her to not be very understanding of my situation.

It was in my best interest to get her as into Muskie fishing, Ice fishing lakers and bowhunting whitetails as I could. Last year I had a client whos never been muskie fishing catch a 53 incher on the very first cast!! That made the next 10 hrs I spent with him in the boat alot less stressful for me! She fished fairly consistantly for 3 yrs before even boating a legal fish. Lots of close calls but just couldnt get it done. Im just glad to see things are starting to come together for her alot more often after many years of frusteration!

Nice muskies! Congrats to your wife Lee! I agree that the best tactic a fisherman can do is to get the woman in his life "hooked". grin

I have also caught the laker bug a couple winters ago. Pretty darn awesome seeing those bright red marks on the locator. Which lakes do you usually hit up there in the winter?

I dont anymore ....besides the fact that the lakes are not as good, it gets old being checked by the same game wardens every day over on bluewater and trout. I Usually cowboy up and make the hour and a half voyage up to burntside.

Yes, I remember your Burntside posts very well. That is where we fish too. I love that lake. Have you ever eaten breakfast at Britton's in Ely?

I just thought you looked familiar and we chatted with a Grand Rapids guy there this past winter and I just wondered if that was you. Nice charming restaurant though!

My whole summer's been packed with work and not many weekends off! frown

Hey Lisa, I think it was your husband that had the laker pic from b-side what areas and depths do you concentrate on when you hunt lakers up there?

Lee I have to watch what I say cause I don't want to give up any of Steve's spots to the internet grin I will have to catch up with you some time and give you a few spots to try on a lake you like to fish wink

Thanks Jim , that would be good. Im probably too open about my laker stuff on the net but Ive kinda shy away from it bothering me because I take people out and physcally show them exactly what im doing and they still cant figure it out. My wife struggles when we are laker fishing. I try to help her and put her in my best spots but she says she dont even see fish come in on her flasher. I dont even know b-side that well ...My best spot is just a spot that Looked good and Ive caught big fish there. The biggest laker ive ever caught I was out on wabana all nite walleye fishing and I decided to hit up bluewater in the morning....I was just fishing a stretch of shoreline. However it must be a decent spot cuz ive caught quite a few more fish out of that area. All I can say is every big laker ive caught has been on Tubes that I made up myself with my muskie fisherman imagination. The biggest mistake I see laker fisherman making while out on the ice is they think they need to be in 60 feet of water ! THINK ABOUT IT a laker can go WHEREVER it wants at this time of year.

We will have to get Lisa to show how its done wink It seems the only way I can out fish her when we are laker fishing is to leave her home grin Now when we get out walleye fishing that's a whole different story. I have always been overly secretive about my spots even before the internet just because I know that I will be careful to the fishery but I am not sure about the next guy. I will let you know when we are up next and maybe go out on Deer and chase around.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
