Pat - Not too bad. Not nearly as bad as Shields. Surface temp was 81 degrees last night. Weeds pretty much gone.

JosMN - For sure! I am on that lake 2 to 3 times a week. White Alumacraft Trophy 195, if ya see me out there. I'm heading up north fishing for the weekend, but will most likely be fishing it on Monday. I am always more then happy to show people around out there. smile

Today's Mazaska report:

Went out with my wife, kids and Kyle.

Beautiful late afternoon on the water. Right off the bat, 3 white bass caught on Salmos. (them). I was determined to catch a fish on x-raps. Nodda dang thang.

I switched to a crawler and harness, and as I was swapping, my wife and Mouneau decided it would be funny to throw my Oakley's around the boat...low an behold, they went in the lake. frown No biggy....um, really, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr but no biggy.

So we made a turn to troll the other direction, my son(8yrs old) casts....his whole pole into the lake...grrrr? no, i still remained calm....

My daughter (6) bless her hart, gave my wife the cooler with just cold water and ice, and she dumped it right down Kyles back/shirt..YAY. Game on eh? Yes I guess. Then she, my delightful daughter decided I was the Vikings coach and dumped her Gatorade down my back...Really game on now. So I took our crappie that was in the livewell that my wife caught and threw it back in the lake. OOOPPSSS!

Well, then my son decided I should go swimming. whammo, in da drink.

So, all in all on this bambling fishin report today. 6 white bass, 1 sunnie, 1 crappie.

If you find a pole with an orange/white Salmo...pls return it to me, if you find a camo pair of Oakley half jackets with amber polarized, return as well smile

Was out there this morning for a couple hrs, got two nicer crappies and had one big fish on, never did see what it was. But it was sure staying down like a walleye, definately wasn't a sheep head.

was out today trying to get my brother his first walleye..... got everything else but what we were looking for. got a couple white bass, perch, two nice bass (berkley power worm and a floating frog near the docks in SW corner) and one pike. pretty nice day on the lake, calm and quiet.

is this lake always green or is that just a biproduct of the heavy rains and now the warm temps?

Bad news. Lets call it the ugly stick commercial.

Wife: "Honey, I am taking your truck to work today because my car needs an oil change"

Me: "But Babe, I was gonna go..."

Wife: "You are not going fishing today! I need an oil change, and you need to finish putting the new ceiling fans up"

Me: "Yes Dear"

Kinda like the 'honey, not tonight, I have a headache'.....

i got that today too!!!!! after driving my wife's parents from mall to mall last weekend i told her i was going to go fishing friday and saturday this weekend...... a few days ago it was no problem, but today i am taking her little rat of a dog to the vet, picking out paint colors, and trying to keep my hopes up that tomorrow will still work out.

well i actually got out to the lake today..... of course my wife called before i even got my motor started at the landing telling me her dog ate something metal. i say let natural selection take its course, i dont think the world will stop spinning without any cockapoos running around.....

so yeah, in the 45 minutes i was actually fishing i had a nice hard hit deep (30ish fow) on a gulp leach and then i got a whopping 4" perch on a hornet.

mosquitoman- We where pulling in Pike on salmo's yesterday, but that's it. The crappies have seemed to move to their winter locations over deep water.

Bring you vex or marcum. smile

How's the fishing been lately on Mazaska? I've never fished the lake before but have heard good things in the past? My dad and brothers are going to be in town and we plan on doing some ice fishing this weekend. Would it be worth the time to drive down and fish Mazaska? Thanks for the info!

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
