I havnt been in the area for a while, but as stated, you have better luck, and not have to play bumper boats if you go during the weekdays.

Those (muskies) have got to be some very educated fish for all the toys they see on a weekly basis. Anyone ever see much for walleye or crappie action this year? Haven't made it there yet but when I do it is ALWAYS on a week day as with many lakes. L2f

  • 3 weeks later...

I have not been on French Lake this year. Just wondering about putting in a glass 18 1/2 foot boat from the public access. Did it last year but it was a task.

Anybody put in lately? Super shallow once again?

Also has the lake really "greened up" to pea soup yet? How bad is the algae?

Looking at a trip later in the week. Thanks in advance for any info.

I can get my 20 foot deep v alum. in. The water is up about 6 inches from last year. Its not too bad on the green yet, but that was last weekend. I am heading out there tonight in my boat to watch the fireworks, I'll repost on the water color.

Water is not that bad at all. Weeds seem to have died off except the milfoil, which isn't all that bad.

Trolled for about an hour as we were out there for fireworks...

Marked tons! No bites. Too much boat traffic.

Good thing them way-point's on my gps side don't show co-ords! :P

Pretty much same thing on Mazaska tonight, marked a ton in the same depth, and not much to show for it.

Maybe we were fishing a different French Lake than you yesterday, but the water was the worst I've ever seen it. Visibility was less than a foot. I was tossing Cowgirls with silver blades and couldn't even see them when the leader hit my rod tip with only the last 3 eyelets in the water.

The midlake humps were covered in a green slime with spots of neon blue sludge.

At least it kept most of the skiers and jetskiers off the water, though.

Really? It didn't seem as bad as it normally is to me at least smirk

I knew it was bad when I saw a boat a few hundred yards away get up to go and shot out a solid green roostertail. I had to powerwash my rods and reels when I got back because they were covered in a nasty green sludge.

All of this was just off the public landing and off the two humps in the middle. Maybe it was nicer on the side of the lake by Hoy's.

Something musta popped from Sunday to yesterday. Normally I have to power wash the boat right after being in there and or shields to get the slime off. (I have a white boat). Shes pretty clean though!

What part of the lake were you fishing? I am going to head over there on Sunday to check it out. I was down to West Newton On Friday and brought home some nice Blue Gills.

Hit up the circus on French today. Caught some nice crappies in the A.M. but once all the people moved in the bite stopped. Moved away from the crowd in 20 FOW and dusted a few big toads. All in all a good day.

The wife and I went out there on Friday and caught a lot of nice nice crappies. Went back with high hopes for Sat and caught about 10 but nothing to write home about. Bite was really slow. A lot of people like you said. I think it may have been the storm that blow in on Friday because it was one after the other. Tried duck on Sunday then and nothing but the lake looked like there was an ice fishing contest going on. So many people.

does hoys resort have bait ? thanks

No. Depending where your coming from, there are 2 places in town, or 1 in Shieldsville on hwy 21.

You can use Hoys or the DNR. The west end has an access as well to drive out from.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
