I just got back from a week long trip on sand. It took me a while to find active fish but this is what i found out. most of my fish were between 18 down to 11 inches and that's good to see. I never tried minnows just leaches and crawlers with the crawlers being favored. when i started in the week the water temps were as high as 73.4 but two days ago it was low as 67.2. It took me a while to figure them out but when i did it seemed like the fronts moving through did not affect them. 13 to 14 FOW with weed lines were key for me and i caught more moving rather then anchored. Although one spot that had a pile of rocks and weeds nearby could be fished anchored easily. GL all

Hey Lucky,I was up there too & came back 6/30.Stayed 3 weeks grin & found fish my 2nd day.We got most of ours from the weedline out to the first break, which where we were fishing was 13'-18'.On the days with very little wind we even got some on the break to deep water(18'-24').The best spot for us was also a mix of weeds & rocks with most of our fish got rigging leeches.A lot of 10-12" fish(that went back)but a couple of 17's,an 18 & 19, plus 2 20's.All but 1,that was hooked deep,of the big fish went back too.I was in a 02 Crestliner FH with a 115 Yamaha on it usually by myself. What kind of boat do you have?Where did you stay?We are on the SE end of the lake close to Lakewood Lodge

Gunner55. I stay at driftwood resort. I have been going up there for years with the guys in the spring and this was the first time we took a family trip. I fish out of a white with green decals Warrior. Do You have a place up there?

Yeah,I've been fishing Sand since the mid 60's when my grandparents bought the place, that's when Grandpa retired. We are on the SE end of the lake a little north of Lakewood Lodge.I think I know where Driftwood is,my parents are friends of 1 of the previuos owners. It's close to the channel where you go into little Sand, isn't it?I don't get up to that end of the lake very often.I'm usually fishing the south side of the islands back down to the narrows.Maybe our paths will cross out on the lake sometime. We're getting ready to head up again next week sometime.Do you get up there more than once a year?

I have been up at Lakewood Lodge since last Saturday and plan to be here until this coming Saturday. So far the kids and I have had a blast catching pike off the docks with bright colored spinner baits (not a difficult task on this lake and fun on Med. action gear). We plan to head out for Crappies for an evening or two before heading out, and have seen plenty of other resort guests hauling in near limits of walleyes rigging the outside weed edges with leeches and crawlers. I had a massive pike smash my brand new Northland Reed Runner spinner bait the other night and it not only straightened the wire, it pulled the twist out of the line tie point too!

Hey Mike,I got up here on Monday pm & didn't fish until Wed.Managed to find 2 eyes rigging leeches on a wind blown weed line.1 would of been a nice eater but I didn't want to mess with just 1 so C&R.The other was just a baby but did find a couple of crappies early this morning. We have our own place on the lake & we're just a few doors north of the resort. What are you fishing out of?I'm in a 02 Crestliner FH/Yamaha 115,maybe see you on the lake.Tight lines!!

Finally found some eyes & figured out how to get them to bite.I been fishing a rock bar that connects 2 other pcs of main lake structure. The fish are anywhere from 14-30 fow, even spotted some in 35.My best results have been 16-24 on the hard bottom edge.Rigging crawlers & leeches has been the go to method but did have some action on spinners/leech.A lot of 10-12" fish going back but did have a 22 last week,a 16 yesterday,& a 17 today, all C&R.Did find a few crappie a week & 1/2 ago so had a meal of fresh fish with my sister & BIL

With very little wind yesterday for a change we gave it a shot.Still found some fish relatively shallow,15-25',very early & they weren't there very long. When it started to get more light & wind they went deeper.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
