We are itching to get out on Cedar to get some crappies. Any reports for ice conditions out there?

Anybody have some input? I'm wondering if heading out there on Tuesday or Wednesday is a possibility. How are the other south metro lakes looking?

I drive by every day and it looks like the rain didn't break anything up. As of this morning, it looked like all the water on top of the ice had frozen and the lake was back in ice production mode. But this is just observations from the car, please proceed with caution. I personally wouldn't even try until this coming weekend--but I've fallen through in my younger days and am VERY ice-weary. Be mindful of the aeration area, as well. GOOD LUCK!

Heading out to Cedar in the AM tomorrow. Got a couple spots to hit from last year that produced high-quality panfish action all day and some small eyes as well. Just looking for ice updates before we head down there. Anyone been on the lake yet and know how thick the ice is. Any input on ice thickness and what side of the lake you were on would be great. Thanks

Saw some people using the north side access. I went out on the N.E. side. 5 inches of ice all the way. Crappie bite seems to have moved much further out this year as I only caught one near the area where the pressure ridge was last year. I totally chickened out when the ice went from cloudy to pure black ice about 150 yards out. Drilled a few holes and the ice was still 5 inches thick, but it just freaked me out and I couldn't walk across it.

Was out yesterday. 5 inches of ice out there.

BryanL, I read your post prior to going out. I thought, how bad could it be. Well, I walked out and found that black ice. I found myself in the same boat as you!

Turned right around and went back to the cloudy ice. Something about the black ice that scares the S@#t out of a person. No fish is worth it!

A guy did come across the ice on one of those Wilcraft machines. Set up about 20 yards from me. He was on that black ice and did not go through. Made me feel a little better about my spot.

We did find a good spot and caught a lot of fish. All, the typical cedar lake size crappies. Nothing to right home about.

isint the black ice the better ice

Correct black ice is much stronger than cloudy/white ice...however I can't blame anyone for being uneasy when the ice is crystal clear. Then add in a few cracks and deep gurlging noises...that is early season fishing for us.

What size are the crappie on cedar? Was on pelican near Monticello on Sunday and they were small but still fun to catch.

7"-10" crappies. Cedar lake has produced nothing but great fishing for me so far this year. Tons of crappies, some nice eater walleyes and Bass and northerns on tip ups. Couple times out so far and it has been a blast

10 inch crappies out of cedar? shocked i gotta see pictures to believe that. Havent seen a crappie bigger than 7 inches come out of that lake in 10 years.

Kind of what I was thinking too... I've heard a few reports that the crappies have grown a little in size though, but 10 inches is probably pushing it... Still a fun lake to fish either way...

How deep are we talking here? Last year it was crazy shallow near the pressure ridge. My son (9) and I are heading out somewhere tomorrow to break in his new showdown and our new aqua vu micro. I know there is a deeper hole out near the hump off the point, which is definitely within walking distance from the north side boat ramp......we might talk Uncle Chris from Florida into joining us tomorrow too......ice is probaby 6" right now????

We fished in about 8.5' yesterday. The deepest you'll probably find this year will be around 11'. Ice was about 7 inches were we were. FYI, we saw the Scott County Sheriff on the north shore and I heard a rumor that he was giving out parking tickets... Merry Christmas, here's a ticket! I hope it was just warnings.

Merry Christmas to all! smile

Since when can't you park along the north side? There is plenty of parking far enough off the road. I parked there all last year and walked out.

I caught a 10" bluegill on Sunday on Cedar. I did release it. Biggest bluegill I've caught in over 20 years. As far as crappies, it seems the ones I catch are 7'-8 1/2" with ocassionaly one that will be just a little bit bigger.

northerns on tip ups

Are you sure they were pike and not tigers? Just asking because I've fished that lake for a decade now and have yet to catch a single pike. The DNR site does say they're in there, but there are a lot more tigers and they do look a little the same

That's what I meant when I said black ice. So yes, I would say it is the same. Lots of black ice on Cedar. I walked out about 400 yards yesterday and not much happening. Moved in by the old pressure ridge area from last year and was able to pick up a few. Only fished for a few hours during mid day though.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
