I agree with Fisherdog - I have caught lots of quality smallies on these lakes, especially Lida. Please practice catch and release as a reminder.

I was up and fished Ottertail all last week, so I thought I'd give a brief report on my experience...

The fishing was tough / slow for the walleye's. Moved around the entire lake trying to find the hot bite, but never really did get into them. Hit all the mid-lake humps pulling spinners / crawlers. I did manage to get a 23" walleye, but seemed like I would only get 1 fish per spot, if that at times.

Also, pulled spinners / crawlers between 18' to 24' on the first drop off on the west side of the lake. Picked up a few walleyes this way. It was almost a little more consistent than fishing the mid-lake humps.

Lastly, we pulled crankbaits on the first breaks from shore on the deep sides of the weedbeds (10'to 15') trying to find some northerns for the kids to catch. I caught a 31" northern and my son and nephew each caught 27" northerns. My son also caught a 20" walleye this way too.

Despite the fact that we have experienced a far better bite in the past than we did this year, we still caught some fish and had an absolute blast!

HOF#13, sorry to hear the eye's didn't cooperate. Sounds like you were in the right spots but mabye had the wrong bait. Did you try leeches or minnows? Crawlers have not been working for me.

Hey Matt. I really didn't try any other bait. Now that you mention it though, I should have tried to mix up the presentation a bit to see if I could hit on something that was more productive. We did catch fish but it was very hit and miss. Perhaps leeches or minnow would have been more effective. I don't know why I didn't try switching baits considering that's one of the most obvious things to do?!?!? crazy

I was blaming a lot of it on the frequent weather fronts that seemed to come through. It didn't seem like we had any real consistent weather for more than half a day.

Leech's have been the ticket for me. If you are in a spot for more then 10 min with out a bite MOVE.

I haven't had any luck but its been 2 week since I last tried, I keep hearing that the MOON faze isn't right this year, Not saying I know anything about that but if its going to start heating up it should happen soon I would think.

Yea, we didn't give a spot too much time to produce fish before we moved on.

I didn't try the night bite. There were a few boats out a couple of nights, but not very darn many.

I fished the night bite on Rush the middle of last week, pretty close to the full moon. Got 1 eye the first night and 4 eyes the second night. The biggest was just 18.5 inches. No big pigs this year.

Just got up to the lake yesterday & the in-laws are coming up for the week this weekend. Typically we do some panfishing on the lakes around Ottertail during the day & then hit up the evening troll bite (because it is easy fishing - I drive & they hold on to the rods).

I am concerned this year that with the cool summer the troll bite just is not happening yet. Any reports of a good troll bite? If not, has anyone had good success with fishing lighted corks in the evening on Ottertail?

Thanks for the help!

ranger for me, sounds like the pelican rapids area is right for you. Lizzie crystal rush and NS Lida all have fishable smallmouth populations and all the lakes are close to eachother. They also have nice largemouths.

Guess I'll report the bite. Tried trolling 2 nights without success. Boated a 14" walleye and a rock bass trolling raps on the flats.

Have done some panfishing on a few area lakes & have found a few on the weedlines, but that has been slow as well.

Well thanks for reporting back, I have had no luck trolling at night on OT so far this year but its been 3 weeks since I last tried.

The bugs are ridiculous right now as soon as it starts to get dark, so it's not even that fun if you are catching fish trolling. I hate it when I have to chew my beer because of all the bugs that flew into the can.

Talking to a buddy of mine about the bite recently being I've been on Mille Lacs lately, the troll bite is pretty decent during the day. He's been trolling shad raps around the edges of the flats and has been pulling in a few. I haven't had a chance to get out and try it myself, but hope to some day this week.

Just an update - haven't done any trolling in the last couple of days, but did hit up the day bite yesterday.

Ended up catching & releasing 12 walleyes in the 12-16" range for 4 hours of fishing. Caught the fish in 22 - 30 ft with crawler harnesses.

Off to do some panfishing.

Didn't do any trolling, but took the kids out slip bobbering in 18-20 FOW with leeches and jigs. Put 4 in the box to bring home for breakfast, all caught between 7:45 and 9:00 pm. We did see a number of people trolling with raps but didn't see anybody boat a fish and the ones I talked with said the bite was really poor and surprised we had 4 in the box. Happy fishing all!

Thanks Mike.... Have yet to give the slip bobbering a try, but we caught a couple in the evening as well working crawler harnesses.

I haven't tried crawler's yet myself. And doubt I'll get to it this weekend as I'm leaving in the morning for a trip to Mille Lacs for two days which means I'll need to mow my lawn tonight! I'll get the harnesses out next week or even revert back to jigging along the weedlines with a leech or minnow with the cooler weather coming. That's seemed to be produtive all summer, with the exception of Mille Lacs.

Anybody get out this weekend to try the troll bite? I should be on tomorrow afternoon with some people and plan on trying a mix of things, finishing with trolling lead core in the 20-30 fow areas with raps on. We had a very producitve weekend on Mille Lacs using that presentation along with rigs on the flats.

Trolling for big northern pike the last 2 weekends. I don't normally fish for them but it was a lot of fun.

Well, I've been seeing a lot of guys coming off of the lake with empty boxes. Didn't get out trolling like I wanted to today, but we've gone back to jigging the way we did in the spring. Slap on a 1/8th or 1/4 oz jig in yellow/pink, yellow/orange or white/blue and tip with the leech if you can get em (or use gulp alive leeches) and jig along the weeds in 15 to 18 FOW. Minnows have pulled a few, but leeches are still hot. We haven't gone out to Ottertail in the last week and not come back with at least one fish a person. We haven't had anything really big, the largest being 21 inches, but we're getting fish. I hope this helps you catch some more fish.

Where you fishin em and what did you catch them on? I've had a bad year for pike, granted I haven't spent much time fishing them but would like to hook into a nice one before the ice gets on the lakes.

you were a lucky person to be at home. I didn't start pulling until right before sunset, but it was very slow. We had a 1/2 hour of biting but small.

I'm surprised that the day bite has been decent if you can find them. I've been spending time on the south east side of the lake along the weeks and around the flats. With how gorgeous today is, I'm sad I can't get out before the kids get home from school and my better half has to work but I've got a meeting today preventing me from going out.

And just to clarify how often I get out, I was out on OT 3 times over the last week. Once in the AM and twice in the evening. Evening bite was best overall. Would have been out more but was out on Mille Lacs Saturday and Sunday.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
