A buddy of mine sent a pic of a full cooler of smelt to my phone last night while I was working. It's "ON". Planning on giving it a try tomorrow night.

I've got no fresh ones to give you, but I put up a few in borax and froze them in plastic bags. If you want them leave an e-mail or phone # and I'll get ahold of you. Only made it out a couple evenings and it was kind of a spur of the moment deal. Didn't do great, but had a small smelt-fry and put a few in the freezer for bait.

A buddy and I did some seining last night from 9:30 till about 11pm. On our first pull we ended up with about a gallon in the net. In all I suppose we got somewhere around 6-7 gallons. We gave a couple spectators a gallon or so and they said only a couple people down by the creek, which was suprising to me.

Magicbus, if you are coming to Deer River today, I could hook you up with some smelt. Let me know at two one eight two five nine six eight three four.

sorry so slow guys.

thanks for the offer peatmoss. i'd take you up on it but bmc is going out on a limb and going to actually take me with him.

so hopefully there's a few left for the getting.

it also appears that why the crick was so quiet and peacefull was because i wasn't at the right one.

perhaps that's why everyone was slowing down and staring at me the other nite.

thanks everyone

Themagicbus and I did some seining this evening and ended up with 5-6 gallons. We were out from about 9 till 12. We also tried Tioga Beach on a whim and only got small perch and some little bluegills. Maybe they are in there earlier???

That's the end of smelting for me for the year. My brother and I had a meal of them today and I'm gonna throw some in the smoker. I've got 15 dozen put up for tip up fishing next winter, that should be enough! grin

Jason, great meeting you and hopefully I can get up yer way this summer for some monster gills!

Jason,

I figured you'd still be cleaning your cooler full of them silver devils! How did your kids like them? I tried to "bribe" my brother's 4 year old daughter into trying one. I set a dollar on the table and she said, "I can buy some gum with that dollar." Just when we thought she was gonna put the piece of smelt in her mouth, she rolled her eyes and said "Yuck", throwing it back on my plate. Too funny!

Well said.  I see this everyday at work. Some people come in alone, get their items and leave. While others come in as a group or family, walk all around gawking and touching everything in site. If we just adhere to common sense and social distance these few weeks we can have a better summer.

We each have rods for panfish, nords and eyes, there a tad rusty.🤣 not to mention we each have a flyrod. That's enough. Only got so much storage room.

Natural colors, Browns, black, and orange have been the go to colors for the lakes and river here around Morrison County. I will say I don't fish Muskies much anymore, so things could have changed.

Between rods salmon, catfish, walleye, panfish I've got a bunch.  Think I have 11 salmon rods alone for copper, downriggers, lead core and dipsey/slide divers.    Probably should downsize some as I haven't used most of my cat rods for years now but have lent them out for guys who go sturgeon fishing in the spring.  I have several baitcasters that I don't use much anymore as I've added more linecounters for trolling and bottom bouncers.  So my older rods sit back at home a lot.

Don't worry he already did it himself today again on the Dutch Boys best Pike not Ski post😂😂   Boy that's a tough question Smurf. It all depends your style and species your after and seriously how much of a budget you have to spend and go nuts with. Personally for myself I own 28 summer rod reel combos. Do I need that many heck NO!! I am a multi species fisherman and competed in Tourneys  and still do on occasion for a few years so my arsenal is loaded. Serious  Bass fisherman probably have more than most guys. But for eyes I have a few 7 ft rigging rigging combos  slip bobber combos  couple leadcore setups,  and line counters. custom jig rapping rods it goes on and on and adds up. But to answer to go out and catch fish smurf you really don't need that many but for different applications it will improve your success 👍 I would say its more of a addiction bad habit and definitely overkill to some extent! 😉

Not at all Dutch just giving Royce some crap for posting a ski pick in your Topic best MN Pike? Few of us had a little discussion last night in the kayak section 😂😂
