I swung through the parking lot today with my boat....the lot was packed, not a place to park. Hit a different lake and did quite well. Guess I'll stick to just fishing it during the week.

25 guys in the opener Saturday tourney and 5 eyes brought in.

20" won the money none for me yet. I'll keep plugging away.

Some pannies cooperated for the fish fry though.

Couldn't keep the bass off either.

Ferny.

Both lakes are good pike lakes. I have most experience with west, but east can be great at times too. They are weed related fish so look there. I like to start with the emmerging reeds then move to the thicker stuff and breaklines.

Spoons work the best for me, but others like spiners (both inline, and saftey pin).

It is a Muskie fishery, so make sure of your catch if you are keeping something, and I beleave there is a protected slot, so bring a ruler.

It's a good pike lake for size just not the numbers.

Try around the humps and saddles between the islands any were there's rocks, current or both.

Big bass spinner baits work best with big willow leafs getting the edge. Grey, white chart. colors seem to produce well. Lots of perch and crappies for them to feed on.

Some very big pike in the lake they have to be to compete for food with the muskies after all. Saw the biggest pike of my life on the lake. Was a pig of a fish with great pike markings on it would have made for a great picture. One thing I don't understand is the pike have great markings in the lake and are real pretty healthy looking fish but the muskies are just the opposite with messed up fins, cuts and they look at you all cross eyed.

Moved two Wednesday night. One got hooks but threw them at the boat and the other blew up on a lure and missed (both high 30's/low 40's). Fishing has been slow like every where else. Long stretches of nothing and a bit of action in a short period of time.

10 guys from work are having our annual small fishing tourney next week (5 boats). All fish go back in unharmed. We randomly pick a different lake each year so there is no "home lake advantage" for anyone. As always, the tourney is strictly for bragging rights. grin It's a multi-species tourney, we have to catch bass/pike/walleye to have a shot at taking the trophy (and bragging rights.) So......I'm looking for reports/hints on chasing some walleyes out there on East/West Rush. (I have the bass/pike covered.) You all know how much fun it is heckling your co-workers for an entire year (note my long standing tag line), so I am looking for some FM help here to make my partner and I 3-peat defending champs! It's just been too much fun the last two years to go down without giving it our best shot. smile All manner of research into specific lake tricks and tips is legal in our tourney, so I am utilizing all my resources. If anyone is willing to help out the cause, my parnter and I would really appreciate it! Feel free to email me if you'd rather not post your tips online, my address is in my profile. Thanks for the help!

Best bet is to get yourself a map and a pile of lures. Hit the likely spots, durring the week. Fish them differently or fish your lures differently than others and you may get lucky. Or fish the weekend and run into others pounding the same waters.

Good luck.

Going to Rush Lake near Rush city tomorrow and am curious if i should work East or West rush for the most action. im leaning toward West rush since it has more structure that East. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Might go for some walleye as well as the sun is going down. Thanks in advance!

I would recommend avoiding the knee jerk reaction to fish west...east is pretty darn good...both have been stocked with similar numbers of fish over the years.

I have seen a lot more on west latley, I have fished east hard the last few weeks and only saw a couple small ones. Fish deep weed line edges on west thats your best bet but good luck over all west has been real slow. Have been fishing forest lake and seeing a lot more fish on that lake

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
