Sunny/Crappie mix biting on north end of West Rush. Evenings are a little better and the action seems to follow the warming days.

We were up in the park last night and on Saturday night. The crappies were in on Saturday night but did not see a single crappie caught last night. Just sunnies and they were small for the most part.

The bite is on. Multiple limits being caught in many parts of the lake. Mostly in the channels and other protected areas like the bays. Warmer night time temps really helped push the crappies in tighter. Minnows have been best but leeches and waxies on flu flu jigs have been getting bit too. It's no secret there's lots of crappies in rush. Hopefully some of those fish get put back so it can keep booming.

Right on! Be selective and don't over harvest.

that is no joke guys, we were out by frandsen park wed and thurs there were so many people up there keeping everything they caught and i mean everything. alot of them brought there extremely young kids with just so they could take home more limits. fishing this time of year is the most fun i have all year but it wont last if people keep over harvesting.

Only thing you can do if you see them out keeping more than their limit is call TIP. I am surprised I didn't see a DNR officer there yesterday while we were fishing in the boat. With the quantity of people fishing that spot, there needs to be some enforcement as I would venture to guess a few rules were being broken.

I'm thinking Golden Shiner. Did you eat it?

Fishing was slow on Saturday, I did see one guy going for very large crappie/sunfish using a bass size spinner bait.

no we deffinately didn't eat it but i'm sure alot of people up there that day would have.

using lights to attract bait fish in mn is illegal you can do it in wisconsin but not here.

i think the water is still a little cold for them to be hitting on spinners yet. i could be wrong but i think it would be a couple more weeks yet.

The Rush is on. With the crappie and bluegill biting in the shallows as they are, the only thing that can stop a masacre this weekend is the weather.

Sounds like the rain is gonna hold off and there will be plenty of time to fill a bucket... or a couple hundred. There's really that many fish in shallow. Biggest I've seen yet was 13 1/2" (crappie). Have fun out there tmrw everyone.

Didnt catch anyhing on Rush fishing on shore with the crowds... Is this lake over harvested or are they just not biting? There seems to have been 10000 people fishing from shore. But nothing was caught from anybody, not even the boats.

There is heavy fishing pressure in certain spots and the fish are only in certain spots. The area you fished might have had a big harvest lately but there are definately a lot of fish in the lake. There are few trophy panfish around but they exist. It's nice to find your own spot or get away from the crowds once they get big and harvest totals get up there.

The cold front that came in just shut the fish down wait a few days for the weather to stabilize and head back it will be better

How is the boat launch at West Rush? I've seen the water levels in some of the lakes in the north Metro and they were very very low.

Just got back from fishing Rush. The landing on west is fine. Water level looks to be normal. And the best part is, the crappies were hungry. grin

So, I fished Rush this morning for the first time during open water season. I had a great time... I enjoyed the scenery, especially the birds. The sounds of the loons certainly beats an auger cutting through two feet of ice!

Didn't catch a fish though.

Would anyone be willing to give me a suggestion on where and how I could catch a crappie on that lake? (I'm talking general info... depths and/or baits, not GPS coordinates or anything).

Thanks!

Find dark bottom, shallow areas where the water is warmer.(we were catching them in 3' of water) Plastics far out produced crappie minnows for us.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
