I have been out twice this week, yesterday aftenoon/evening and Monday midday. Did ok Monday being it was midday with one eye a a couple of nice crappies. One crappie yesterday...only stayed until 6 pm as it was so slow. 7" of ice. I took my wheeler out and many others out too...some permanent houses. I would bet some foolhardy person will be driving out this weekend, but not me for a week or so!

Judging by the amount of people out there on Monday, the zoo should be in full swing this weekend.

lol no doubt about it

I've had some real great success out on West for eyes, but you should go on a weekday (well after dark is likely) so that many have left. The good spots tend to be the very shallow (great spring walleye spots) structure-related. I'm not getting to specific, but being in 6-10 ft of water, you need to use as little light as possible in the house, and NO noise. I mean to say is NO NOISE! It is worthless trying this with all the atv and auto traffic, but get there late, and drill/set-up and then kill 1/2 hr in the truck (eat McD's) then get in to it after the noise has died down. You would be suprised how hot it can get, and some hogs too. I still am suprised, like last winter... this worked ALL WINTER. Yes, ALL WINTER! Even in February! I know right? YES! Active walleyes in February! This is why I cant get into specifics on where, but find some good walleye structure in 10(ish) ft. and hit it at silent time.

Some of you might see that "fool" over by the islands or the points in VERY shallow water and laugh, but stop by and learn somethin! It is so rewarding to find/catch these eyes like this!

FishSystem, What is the best time of the evening you have had luck. I have had marginal winter success for walleyes on rush but have no problem finding them in the summer season and I wish i knew what I was doing wrong. It would be nice to pull a few more through the ice.

HI guys/gals

I'm going to expand on the lakes I fish and am going to try W Rush this weekend. I've heard about fishing around some of the islands for perch and crappies on the W side. Where is the best place to access the lake. I will be trudging through the snow, so the less walking the better!!

If I punch some holes and search, what's the average size on the crappies and perch.. Is it the typical 8-10 inchers?

I don't want to waste my time and get tired from walking out for a bunch of 7 inch fish...

Don't need any any of your hot spots, as I'll do the searching, just need to know where to access the lake and what I can expect if I put some time in...Thanks

Is it a 10 crappie limit, and is there a size limit restraint?

In my opinion the best place to access would be the West Rush public access. There are many walkable fishing spots from there. There are some nice crappies if you pick through them, don't expect to reel up a 8-10" crappie everytime. The access is located on Acacia Trail just north of 512th St, it will be easy to spot because the traffic ther on the weekends is a lot like rush hour in the cities. Get a lake map, try it out and if you put the time in you will be successful.

I have only had any good success in the evening on East Rush. I haven't had much luck on West for walleyes except in the shallows, and I only fish those spots when there isn't much traffic around. I start late, like 10 pm because thats when most are gone or leaving (on weekdays). Hour after dark if I fish an area with no traffic anywhere near me. Good luck.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ICE IS NEVER SAFE BETWEEN THE 2 ISLANDS OUT FROM THE NORTH ACCESS ON WEST!

I was just loading up right now to maybe make a early morning trip up and check out shallows, I am glad I just read your post, it conferms a few others I got from some of my dads friends. But do you think if I am on the ice at 4:30ish that would work??or would it be better to maybe head up yet tonight.

Thanks

The right spots you can get a good limit of 9"+ crappies, and there are some easy walking distance from the access Johnsonator mentioned.

Good Luck

I spent all day fishing Thursday. I was lucky enough to get a limit of crappies and a couple nice sunfish. Evening I moved to an area in hopes of gettig a couple nice walleye. I ended up catching 5 walleyes however, they ranged from 8 to 11 inches but I did lose something nice in that spot as well. Maybe the big guys just were not hungry or maybe I was just not in the right spot. All in all it was a great day to be out. Good luck to all

That is the ONLY way to access West Rush. There are no other acesses unless you live or own property on the lake. It should be no problem traveling throughut the lake from the public access, the ice is plenty thick so far. Good Luck.

I stand corrected. I forgot about the park. Although I don't know if you could drive an ATV through there. I do know the warden is out today, so if you got 2 or 3 passangers riding on a 1 passanger ATV, I'd be careful.

Just go out from the public access 300 yards quartering to the right for crappies. If you want perch I'd stick to east rush northwest of the access or go out straight out from the resort. On west you can walk out and fish by Wilson island as well. It's really not a hard lake to fish and you'll see where everyone has been fishing. Most of the holes drilled are for crappies.

I'm not saying I would feel safe doing it but people were driving out from the acess tonight. Measured 8 1/2" to 9" tonight where we were and the fishing was SLOW. Lots of lookers but no takers.

I fished W. Rush today and the bite was light but plenty good enough. On the outskirts of a community spot it was easy to get my limit and then some for releasing too.

I saw a car out on the ice again today but that is not for me until Feb. Lots of trucks also parked on the ice by the landing. I wonder when we will see the pictures of the vehicles partially submerged this year?

I would also like to know how the ice is after the warm, rainy and then snowy weather? I plan on walking and pulling a portable approx. 300-400 yards.

We'll be out there New Years Day. Any predictions as to whether or not the Christmas slush will be hard by then. Debating on bringing the wheeler down. I don't feel like trudging through slop if I don't need to. Thanks!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
