Hey King Canada. Long time no talk for this guy. Took a drive around the lake yest. morning. Froze up pretty tight on the South Shore and towards the Island. Open in front of Park 2 out about 150 yards and West past the access about 200 yards and about 1/2 mile to the East of the access. It's really running into the lake at the NW inlet by the trap, it's open about 2/3 of the way to the rocky point and about 1/4 mile wide. I sure hope the wind doesn't blow hard out of the South as I'm not into having ice come through the front window! With cooler temps forecasted I'd say another 10 day's unless we get warmer with rain. Later.

Hey DC....how ya been? I'll be out to your neck again as usual for opener...maybe we can hook up this year? I still think of those dock walleyes grin

The folks are heading back from Phoenix to Willmar so I'm sure we'll be out to see um...maybe I'll pop in.

Thanks for the update. I was hoping the ice would be gone by Easter weekend but the 10 day forcast is causing me doubts. Oh well, early iceout usually scr@ws up the opener.

King, the ice is pretty much gone off the lake. Still a little ice blown up on the South/Southeast shore. The ice did some damage to a lift and dock over that way earlier when the wind was out of the N/NE. I'm going over to the inlet by Park 1 in a few minutes and try a little fishing in the creek there. Later.

Hello,

Haven't been able to hit Kandi much except for on the dock. Walleyes were ok in may/june, but seems like the only fish hungry are carp lately!! Sunnies also were elusive, but again, haven't been able to get out much. 2 years ago they were fun off the dock with a waxy.

I was going to point out some spots to a friend, compare notes, and was wondering what opinions were out there to be shared, bait, etc.

I usually use fatheads/jig off the dock, but was minnowless, and used a lindy/crawler lindy/leech setup---which the carp seemed to like.(quite a fight!)

My thought was to troll on the east to southeast side, bump out to the sunken island and then play around the island to the carp trap. any thoughts? reports? luck?

any crappies left on the southwest? never catch any crappies or perch anymore, used to all the time as a kid. also, we never had any bass or sunnies.....

There's more weeds than usual. I haven't had much luck in them. The perch are still there and August seems to bring them to the sunken island. The rockbar at the west end of Northern Lights has nice weeds at 6 1/2 to 7 ft. I've been marking fish and not catching them since June. Wait till fall...it'll be gangbusters.

My nephew Fred was shore fishing off the Island in late October and caught a 36" Snot Rocket and a 29 1/2 inch Walleye the same day.

Would like to find out if its froze over? I know ringo amd solmond are, but at the same time egale and henderson are not. So being that Big Kandi is semi-deep, would like to know so I can figure out a time frame for when it would be thick enough.

henderson is a bad lake to base off of cause it is one of the very last to freeze over!! i would bet that with a some what calm and cold night tonight that most lakes should be froze over!!

Ssome crazy guys out there with some big houses? Be careful men! Went off northern lights. Small eyes (threw all back) and some nice perch. Was great to get back out there again.

Northern Lights is the area of cabins on the south shore of the lake. There is a winter access where the road in curves east. How much snow hit the lake?

Thinking about heading to Kandi this weekend possibly.... just wondering some basic info on the lake, how accessible the lake is right now, easiest access to get on the lake, fish biting, maybe point a newbie on the lake in the right direction, not looking for keepers just some fish to keep a guy busy... thanks for any info

Not to take any "hot spots" from anyone, but during ice fishing were are the best spots to hit the lake for walleyes? I know the lake fairly well as I do quite a bit of open water fishing on it, but I have never hard water fished it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

BUMP!

Does anyone out there have a report on how the ice conditions are?

I'm thinking of hitting this lake and am wondering if it's drivable with a 4x4 pick-up or if I should plan on hoofin' it.

Thanks for the help!

Also, any fishing reports would be a super sweet bonus, too! laugh

Im lead to believe that you will be fine with your 4x4. Most lakes in this area have over 20in. of ice now. Its a pretty big lake to start treking across. I have heard rumors of springs out there, none of which though have ever been seen 1st hand.

I haven't been out to the Island in two weeks but when I was it was a b@tch getting on from Northern Lights. Once on it was do-able. There were very few people fishing the west end but more houses to the north and east of the island which leads me to believe access from Park 2 is better. Avoid the points and any pickup tailgates sticking out of the ice.

Thanks, All!

It sounds pretty sketchy! I think I'll stick to footing it unless there is an obvious plowed road. I usually just fish the southern part of the lake since I'm coming up from the south.

I wonder how bad the slush is?

BigBad401- and andyone else that knows the lake.

My parents have a cabin on Big Kandi for about 15 years now,

I have never really had alot of luck, I finally graduated from college and plan on spending some time fishing for eyes, last year i said that and spent all weekend shooting carp, maybe you seen me? I dont need to know exact spots but just general informaion would be nice, i cant figure out the lake what so ever, I have one spot where i catch dink eyes that keeps my gf satisfyed but where else is there. Where does one fish in a huge mud bowl. Maybe i am missing something with the lake. but it has me confusessed.

Oh well thats fishing,

Might just have to stick on the dock, with my nephew!

I am new to hso, but seriously addicted, keep in touch and tight lines to all.

I'm on the Island. Have been since 93. I think we may have spoken briefly when you passed by shooting carp. It's not just a mud bowl but it can be tough to fish....E-mail me at [email protected]. Glad to share any knowledge I can about the lake.

Yeah, there is a lot of little things about this lake that I have learned, but all during open water. I have never fished hard water on Big Kandi. I do fish a lot around the island though.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
