Today a 4-wheeler went through the ice by the N.E. access. There is a 4' ice ridge about 10 yards out that runs at a right angle to the access. You have to go around the ice ridge to get in or out from the access. That is where he went through (I think this is where a truck went through last week). The South access looks good for snowmobiles and 4-wheelers. I did not visit the Inger access but heard it is good. Good luck!

Both N.E. and South accesses have open water. Lots of dark ice visible from the South end.

I checked several lakes today including Bowstring. All have open water along the shores, ice is dark and with rain forecast for this weekend it should be gone in a week or so.

We will be up for a week staying at Jessie View with Tim and Rita starting Sunday June 14th. Wondering if anyone has been on Bowstring, Jessie or Sand recently.

Fishing depths and baits of choice would be very helpful. Can't wait to get up there. Thanks for any help.

Not sure about Bowstring, but we were hand over fisting the bluegills on Maple Saturday and Sunday. Decent size, quite a bit of weeding, but lots of fun, my nephew (4) caught the most, and I am sure everyone on the lake heard him, just screaming and laughing.

Otis

Forgot, we were using pink hooks and slip bobbers, with a little bit of crawler and leeches

Just got back from fishing. Big walleyes, not many though. Glenn 57, my apologies, I was giving Dodger a hard time. We will be fishing together (I hope now) next week, and we live in the same area. The lake I was speaking of, is in northern WI, about 4 miles from Dodger. We did fish it on those days, and caught a lot of gills, and my nephew had a fantastic time, and he was loud, but the lake is not your secret spot. Hope I didn't mess it up for you, just having some fun with Dodger. Good Luck and good weather.

A buddy and I hit Bowstring today and did good. The fish seemed to be in a neutral mood, but we ended up with 10 nice 'eyes. 18-19' of water was the best. Jig/shiner, 6' lindy/leech, and 6' spinner/leech all caught fish. The fish flys were hatching so things might slow down out there for a bit. We fished from 8am till 3pm.

Can anyone tell me if there is much snow on the lake to make getting around in a truck a hassle? I am coming up this weekend and wondered if I would be able to get around easily in my truck or if I should find an alternative.

Also, how is the NE access - does it have a big heave this year? How has the fishing been lately? Thanks for your help!

I was out on Bowstring this weekend and you can get around pretty much everywhere with 4 wheel drive. Be aware that there are some deep drifts which you can get stuck in as I found this out the hard way. Bring a shovel, tow strap, chains and anything else to help you out if you do get stuck.

Thanks for the reply. I have learned the hard way a few times as well and I was hoping to avoid that again! It is not much fun spending the time digging out the truck.

Haven't been on it but the ice went out on the 3 or 4th of April, going over next week and check the water level for boat landing. We did get a little over a inch of rain the end of last week and theres another rain front coming in right now.

Last year at this time we were wondering if the ice on Bowstring would melt before opener.

Two years ago there still was ice on Winnie on opener. This year it looks like we're heading back in that direction by next weekend - 1" of snow so far today!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
