The wife and I were out last night and the fishing was slow. Fishing 22 FOW. Caught a couple dozen but only kept a few for a meal. As far as size goes they are running small. If I could offer one tip that we found, fish 'em high off the bottom. Most of our crappies came 8-10 feet down. I've been fishing my second rod 4 feet down (yes, two feet under the ice) and have caught quite a few this way. I'll be out again this evening and if I do well I will post again. Good luck.

How did it go? And how are driving conditions?

Did a solo trip last night before pulling the house. Crappie bite was pretty good but nothing for size. I was fishing 8 feet down in 22 FOW with a white glow jig and minnow. They would not hit if the jig/minnow wasn't moving. Caught most of them by making them chase it up 3-4 feet before they would hit. Pulled the house this morning and the driving was still fine.

Has anyone been in that small bay by the water tower yet on South Center for early crappies? Can you even get a boat in there this year?

It looks like the water is still way to low to get a boat in there.

My buddy has a house across the street from the bay, not fishable... or at least I wouldn't waste my time. You could maybe get a small boat in there but it is so shallow it woulnd't be worth it.

Thats what i figured when I didn't see your name on the list so i had to give you a little greif about it. I'm sure we'll bump into each other out there somewhere this summer.

Btw how is the landing on south center did it come up at all or is it about the same? I looked at chisago and green and they might be up 6" and thats probably pushing it.

The access used to have 2 docks - now down to one due to water level going down. I caught huge number (I think over 200) of sunfish and crappie, but they were all small (4-7") - not one was ok size to keep. All over the lake, the size was the same - this is not normal - but maybe now it is?

The lake has been underfished in the last couple years because the access has been almost unusable. Not sure this year will be a whole lot different. They really cant fix the area either as its so shallow for so far out in the lake.. to dredge it in my opinion would be useless. As it will just fill back in. Its muck and silt for about 100 yards out. I too have noticed a bit of a stunting problem. Either that or just a healthy year class coming up.

Well, went for a boat ride tonight.. Water temp was 56 on the main lake. Both side of the landing are useable now, and you can get from South Center to North Center again.

Didnt even wet a line. Just was doing a boat check.. Looked to see weed growth water clarity ect.. but more to get the boat fully ready for the weekend. Got a tournament in Wisconsin.

Good luck in the tourney. I have yet to make it out on the area lakes. Have been on the river a dozen times.

How is the launch (and further out) these days? I've got an I/O and I'm hoping to get out this weekend. Have not been able to get on there in over two years. And the traffic last weekend?

Launch is good this year so far. The water is up about 2 feet from last summer. Traffic was not horrible, but more than its been in the last couple years.. Probably because you can finally use the access.

We were out last night. 3.5 lb walleye, 6 lb northern and all the 8-9" crappies you could catch.

Not bad for 3 hours on a sunday evening for the first time out all year, more of a time to get the boat out than to actually fish.

The 6 year old caught his own fish on his own Toy Story rod, with no help from anyone, the 9 year old, FlapJack thought he was cool because he got to sit on the back deck of the boat since mom wasn't along to take that spot.

I managed a few hours on S.Center today.. on the water by 630- off by 1145.. biggest 5 bass would have weighed 14lbs.. finally found some deepish.. But managed on a school of crappie like lawnie talked about.. 8-11 feet of water weed edge with hard bottom near.. Every cast.. and that was with a tube jig no bobber.. must have caught 75 before I got bored and moved on.. biggest was maybe 10".. but for the most part were 8"..

Are you catching the majority of your Bass of the weedlines Dietz or throwing in the slop? Haven't been able to get any consistency going.....a few here and there.

Fish are in the post spawn slump here for sure. Fish are scattered, got a few fish shallow in slop and a few fish are moving out towards the weed edges. If you are going to hit weed edges, check inside turns first, then points. I have done better on inside turns as of late. However I did find as stated above some fish on deeper rock.

MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

      On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

      Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
