You've got mail Curt.<P>WT, you gonna try and get up to the Rainy before it closes? Saw on another thread you're getting your rig ready for action.<P>Fisky

Very tempting...<P>What has the action been like over there? I suppose it will be like a 3 ring circus to try put a boat in over there this weekend?<P>I haven't fished the river in years... this coming weather makes it very tempting though.

Well Sandee's website has pretty decent reports from the past couple of days. I never made it out this past weekend as hoped {COLD}. I'm sure this weekend will be a zoo.... being its the last weekend open, and this sweet weather will draw the masses! Be nice to get up there wed or thur before the weekend crowds.<P>Fisky

Are there any decent ramps on the CDN side?

Posted

I'm not sure, take a look at the Rainy river forum. Some folks were asking about this over there last week.

"Today they put logs over the access at Frontier ramp, you will have to go in by the side of the ramp in the mud. 2 wheel drives are not recommended."<P>Can you imagine the horror stories of boat launchings this weekend? <P>The older I get, the less patience I have... I think I'm going to pass, unless someone gives me a hot tip on a CDN access with a half way decent ramp. I couldn't find any info in the RR forum.

Yep that Frontier ramp has a short pad and with the low water folks were dropping their trailer wheels off the back edge. The landing at Vidas will/should be open by the weekend {sooner?} and that will help out a bit. Spring crowds, heck its even packed in the fall these past few years. 6-7 years ago you could almost have the river to yourself in the fall, I guess fishing is getting popular!!!<P>Fisky

WT, do you do any Sturgeon fishing in between seasons? How about that Z-bay Pike tourney this year, you should maybe try that.<P>Extend that season ya know!<P>Fisky

I've never intentionally targeted sturgeon. I've always wanted to give it a try though.<P>Ya, the z-bay pike tourney sounds fun. I have a daughter graduating this spring, so I have a honey do list a mile and a 1/2 long...<BR>My wife seems to think that should take priority over fishing... Time will tell I guess.

Oh-Oh, better take a day, end of April or early May, and you go anchor down on deepwater on 4-mile bay. Glob of crawlers squirted with some Crayfish scent usually gets em pretty good. Sturgeon are fun too!<P>Fisky

Mark,<P>Do you know if the river is open at Barwick?<BR>I'm not totally familiar where that is, but my fishing partner knows... We may head up there on Friday.

Barwick is between Franz-Jevene and Manitou Falls, about 30 miles east of Rainy River on Hwy. 11. I would have to believe it is open. Haven't been able to get away. Doesn't look good for this spring. Hope to make the Ontario opener. Hope this helps.

Mark:<P>Thanks!

You guys sure know how to temp someone into making an early spring run. But then I remember an old saying I have, "once I got out of the army, I would never stand in another line again," that goes for boat ramps as well. Nice weekend coming up, time to chase some ice out crappies down here. Bill

Widetrack, the best ramp I know of is at Barwick.

When I was deer hunting last fall, the obvious explosion of wildlife then was evident then too.  I saw over 50 deer, 20+ turkeys, and too many pheasants to count in a week.  Nothing has changed.  These mild fake winters have to be playing a big role in survival.  And if we get another good reproductive cycle in June, I would expect another booming fall season.

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter.   Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th.  I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th.  Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt.   Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
