Birk to the Ravens

I didn't read this but you might remember Birks last play with the Vikings. A HARD SNAP to the shin of the QB for a turn over. He was in the QB's face all the way off the field! It looked as if he was saying something like, What? you can't catch that? You've been throwing the ball like that all day, and you can't catch it?

It is no surprise that he is gone!

He was a good guy and you hate to see him go. I used to see him at Joe's Sporting Goods all the time when I was over in St. Paul. Hopefully he'll retire in Minnesota. The Ravens are going to be pretty good this next year, even though the AFC North is a tough conference.

Hopefully, Matt and Chili are right about Sully.

According to the star trib the Vikes would have given him more money to stay here. This is all about him wanting some new scenery just like chili said. The vikings didn't let him go, he wanted to leave. I hope his groin gives out in the pre season.

I don't think that's the whole story fishers, I've heard on many shows that Birk didn't get along that great with Chili. I think there is more of that having to do with him wanting to leave than anything.

Yea that could be, but still if the Vikings were willing to pay him more money than the Ravens you have to give them credit. Just seems like everyone was saying they didn't have any interest at all. Fact is Birk wanted to leave. I don't get along with my boss sometimes but I still work for the guy.

I wouldn't agree that Birk wanted to leave MN. He is a MN boy. He also is in the progress of starting a fishing show. How is he going to have a fishing based here when he's in Baltimore?

I can't be sure how this will affect the Vikes. I guess we will have to wait and see. I imaging a lot of the players don't get along with Chili. He's an idiot! If you worked under a guy that was an idiot you probably wouldn't like him either.

Vikes need a good QB and a good coach. Not a QB that is past his prime or one that wont ever have one. A coach that at least can manage the clock at the end of a game.

It's simple. Birk NEVER gave the Vikes a chance at matching or bettering the offer from the Ravens. He said last night on Rosen he simply wanted to see another side of the NFL before he retires. Vikes have said many times they would have matched or upped the contract offer. He chose to leave Mn. on his own terms.

I can say that if I wasn't happy with where I worked and got offered the same to work for another company, I would be gone in a heart beat. Now when we are talking the kind of money this man has made, he doesn't have to worry about the money. He can go where he wants. I would have loved to see him stay but if it was his choice, I'm sure he had his reasons. Birk is always pretty politically correct and won't say anything to bash someone so we will never know.

Well then you wouldn't agree with Matt Birk himself. In an interview he said "I wanted to leave Minnesota for a change of scenery. I figured if I didn't do it now it would be a missed opportunity to see other places." And its a fact that the Vikings would have givin him more money. It is what it is.

But yes chili is an idiot.

Well, Birk did go to Harvard. If you listen to KQ92 you would know why he wanted to be near D,C. grin

  • 3 years later...

Well, he called it a career. Had a great career - Super Bowl ring, blocked for Peterson as a rookie, 6 pro bowls, and an all-decade team. Not bad for a 6th round guy.

I wish him well. Going out after a SB, and with all of his bearings intact. More players should call it quits while their body, and head are still usable.

You guys think he's a hall of famer? If not he's close.

I personally don't think so but it's certainly a possibility.

I really like Matt a lot, but Tinglehoff deserves the hall WAY before Matt does. Tinglehoff never missed a game (even preseason and playoffs) in 16 years. Tinglehoff was first team all-pro 5 times! Matt never made first team all-pro.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
